Glucosamine is an amino sugar naturally manufactured by the body from glucose and the amino acid glutamine. Amino sugars are incorporated into the actual structure of body tissues such as nails, tendons, bones, ligaments, skin and heart valves. Glu- cosamine's role within the joints is to stimulate the manufacture of substances called glycosaminoglycans, which are needed as structural components of cartilage and to produce the lubricating synovial fluid. the body's loss of capacity in manufacturing glucosamine is believed to be a major cause of osteoarthritis. Aging and overuse of the joints may influence the manufacturing capacity of glucosamine by the body. canPrev's Joint-Pro formulaTM uses glucosamine hyrdochloride, a rich source of glucosamine.
Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is important for the proper maintenance of cartilage. MSM, along with its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, has been found to replenish the required sulfur in arthritic joints, which frequently have lower levels of sulfur than healthy joints.
Chondroitin Sulfate is another important building block for cartilage. However, its real benefit to joint health is its ability to block enzymes that may damage or even destroy cartilage. The combination of glucosamine and chondroitin has shown favourable re- sults on the balance between cartilage matrix synthesis and degradation (breakdown). Chondroitin can help to repair damaged cartilage, especially in the knees. Clegg D, et al (2006) reporting in the New England Journal of Medicine found that, for individuals with moderate to severe arthritic knee pain, the combination of glucosamine and chon- droitin was statistically more effective than a placebo - about 79 percent in this group had a 20 percent or greater pain reduction compared to only 54 percent for placebo.
Devil's Claw contains chemicals that stimulate circulation and carry inflammatory chemicals away from affected tissues. Balch (2002) cites a randomized double-blind study of 183 subjects in Germany that looked at the effectiveness of devil's claw at re- lieving lower back pain. Not only was devil's claw effective at relieving pain, it was also effective for individuals who had the most severe, radiating type of pain with numbness in the extremities.
Boswellia Serrata research has identified specific active anti-inflammatory ingredients in this herb, which are commonly referred to as boswellic acids. Boswellic acids have been found to inhibit inflammation by blocking the synthesis of leukotrienes. Leukotrienes cause inflammation by promoting free radical damage and they signal the migration of inflammation-producing cells to the inflamed body area. Unlike NSAIDs, long term use of boswellia does not lead to irritation or ulceration of the stomach and it appears to have no significant side effects or toxicity. In a randomized double-blind placebo controlled crossover study of patients with osteoarthritis of the knee, boswellia was found to be effective at decreasing knee pain, increasing knee flexion and increasing walking distance.
Curcumin is the main biologically active phytochemical compound of turmeric. Turmeric is a spice derived from the rhizomes of Curcuma longa, which has been used in Ay- urvedic Medicine for centuries. Curcumin, is extracted from turmeric, concentrated and standardized. Extensive research has been conducted over the years on curcumin and research supports a wide range of health benefits including antioxidant effects, modulation of the production of inflammatory signal molecules. Curcumin are power- ful anti-inflammatory phytochemicals that act as natural cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitors in the body and inhibit the production of the prostaglandins that cause inflam- mation and swelling.
