COMFREY

By: Articles by a Naturopathic Doctor (N.D.)

This plant is a great way to naturally speed the process of healing wounds, bites, stings and more...

Comfrey is also known as 'knitbone' for its ability to speed the healing of broken bones. Its therapeutic actions are broader than this. Comfrey contains agents that help to heal the skin, reduce bruising, decrease inflammation and reduce pain.

Topical comfrey is commonly recommended by natural health practitioners for the following conditions: broken bones, muscle injury, sprained ligaments, pulled tendons, bruises, insect bites and stings, skin ulcers, eczema, psoriasis, rashes and sunburns.

Comfrey root contains more active ingredients than the leaf. In Canada, the sale of comfrey, in any form, is currently illegal. If you are cultivating your own comfrey you can make a decoction or tea from the leaves and root. It can then be used as a wash or soaked into a poultice. Comfrey can also be used in creams and salves. Homeopathic comfrey is also used for injuries, especially of the eye. Homeopathics are greatly diluted and can be safely taken internally.

Comfrey has a narrow therapeutic window when taken internally. This means that the dosage needed to see a medicinal effect is close to the dosage that causes toxicity. Internal use of comfrey should be recommended by a health professional. External use of comfrey is safe, except in pregnancy, while nursing and in those with liver disease. This is because the alkaloids in comfrey may be absorbed, in small amounts through broken skin.
