Understanding the Causes of Bad Breath
Though on the surface, bad breath doesn't seem like that big of a deal, studies have found that it can result in conditions such as anxiety, depression, and symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder. But it's important to understand that bad breath is also a common phenomenon, affecting approximately 1 out of 4 people around the globe, or roughly 31.8% of the population. Sometimes bad breath may simply be caused by our food choices—onions, garlic, dairy, tuna—and habits like drinking coffee and smoking. In such instances, the use of breath-freshening aids can be a godsend!
However, there are other causes for bad breath that can impact your health. The condition, Halitosis, more commonly referred to as bad breath, is a condition that, more often than not, comes from inside the mouth. In fact, of those affected, roughly 85% of cases are caused by issues inside the oral cavity. Other more complex cases of halitosis may be caused by disorders in the nose, sinuses, throat, lungs, esophagus, or stomach, as well as other chronic conditions throughout the body.
Natural Strategies to Eliminate Bad Breath
Antiseptic mouthwash, which contains alcohol, can help eliminate bacteria that may be the cause of your bad breath. However, it is drying, so it can exacerbate the long-term problem. Chlorella, alfalfa, and mint are all effective natural breath fresheners that can help neutralize foul odours. Parsley, eucalyptus, and menthol are also tried and true solutions when it comes to combating bad breath. Gum, breath sprays, and breath mints can help provide temporary relief from bad breath by increasing saliva. Ideally, you should look for products that offer great and long-lasting flavour and are sugar-free to promote good oral hygiene and help prevent dental cavities.
A diet high in raw fruits and vegetables can be a great way to optimize your dietary profile while naturally combating the causes of bad breath.
