Natural & Healthy Chewing Gum: Benefits and Selection
Did you know that chewing gum has been used, in various forms, since ancient times? It has existed since the Neolithic period, with the earliest iterations originally being made from birch bark tar. While we don't know if, at the outset, gum was used for enjoyment or, rather, for medicinal purposes, we do know that birch bark tar does have antiseptic properties and other therapeutic benefits.
Of course, chewing gum has come a long way and has never been more popular. In fact, according to the National Institutes Of Health, the global chewing gum market is estimated to be 560,000 tons per year, representing approximately CAD 6,732,900.00, or roughly 374 billion pieces of chewing gum. Gum is offered in myriad iterations, from sticks to pellets, hollow balls, liquid-filled gum, gum-filled candy, and compressed chewing gum – all available in a dizzying array of flavours.
Conventional gum is also composed of a whole host of unhealthy ingredients – some of which have even been linked to cancer and other serious health conditions like Alzheimer’s.
What to Avoid: Harmful Ingredients in Conventional Chewing Gum
While we have made great strides in our understanding of how unhealthy food ingredients negatively impact our health, the majority of consumers today still give little thought to the quality of their skincare and household cleaning products. This is also true of chewing gum, which can contain a range of very toxic ingredients that are readily absorbed into the bloodstream via the mucosal membranes in the mouth.
Some of the most common toxic ingredients found in conventional chewing gum include:
- Acesulfame K – a synthetic sweetener that contains methylene chloride, a known carcinogen. It has been linked to impairment of the kidneys and liver, mood problems, headaches, nausea, and eyesight problems.
- Aspartame – is metabolized into toxic wood alcohol and formaldehyde - the latter of which is a known carcinogen that is not eliminated from the body by the liver and kidneys. As far as toxicity goes, aspartame has been associated with congenital disabilities, cancers, brain tumours and weight gain.
- BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene) – a toxin used as a preservative, which is banned in many countries worldwide. BHT has been associated with kidney and liver damage and hyperactivity in children and is believed to be carcinogenic.
- Calcium Casein Peptone (Calcium Phosphate) – is frequently used as a whitening agent or texturizer. It may be the most relevant chemical carcinogen ever identified.
- Titanium Dioxide - is often used as a whitening agent in chewing gum. It is potentially carcinogenic and has been linked to autoimmune disorders, asthma, and Crohn's disease.
Explore Healthy Chewing Gum Varieties: Organic and Safe Choices
Although most conventional gum contains very toxic ingredients, a wide range of excellent natural chewing gums are available on the market. Some of the best ingredients to look for in healthy chewing gum include xylitol (although xylitol is toxic to pets) – a low-calorie sweetener shown to help prevent dental caries and helps maintain a natural pH level in the mouth; isomalt – a sugar substitute created from real sugar that has been made from beets. Additional quality ingredients include chicle, dried cane juice, vegetable glycerin, sunflower lecithin, rice flour, and natural flavours. Ideally, only select natural chewing gum that is certified organic and non-GMO.
