BETAINE HCL, WHAT IS IT?
Betaine hydrochloride (Betaine HCl) is an acidic form of betaine, a vitamin-like substance found in grains and other foods. It is an excellent source of hydrochloric acid – an acidifying compound naturally produced by the stomach during the digestion of food. An adequate secretion of HCL is essential for healthy digestion and supports health in numerous ways:
- Assists with protein digestion by activating pepsinogen to pepsin
- Increases the absorption of nutrients from foods
- Inhibits bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine
- Protects the stomach by neutralizing ingested pathogens
- Stimulates bile flow and pancreatic enzyme production
Unfortunately, as we age, our production of Betaine HCL naturally decreases – a condition known as hypochlorhydria – which can significantly affect the body’s ability to properly digest and absorb nutrients. Chronically low HCL production can damage the GI system, resulting in compromised immunity, repeat infections, and all sorts of chronic health issues.
Potential Symptoms Of Low HCL
While most symptoms of low HCL are gastrointestinal, manifestations can take many forms. These may include:
- Anemia
- Bloating
- Burping
- Diarrhea
- Fatigue
- Frequent infections
- Gas & Flatulence
- Hair loss
- Heartburn
- Indigestion
- Nausea
- Neurological issues
- Protein deficiency & Multiple other nutrient deficiencies
- Undigested food (in stool)
- Upset stomach
- Weak, brittle nails
Betaine HCL Supplements – Forms, Formats, and Potency
Betaine HCL supplements promote optimal gastric acidity to support the digestive process as a whole, most notably protein digestion and the absorption of nutrients from the foods we eat. Betaine HCL supplements are also excellent for those with low stomach acid, as a result of aging or due to an existing health condition that compromises their ability to digest foods. In addition, Betaine HCL is often recommended to help stabilize stomach pH and is an expert at killing off harmful bacteria in the gut before they can enter the digestive tract.
Betaine HCL supplements are typically offered in capsules or tablets and powder form, typically in 500mg potency. The recommended starting dose is usually 3g, taken twice a day with meals. These supplements also frequently come in combo blends with pepsin and/or other digestive enzymes to further support digestion.
Benefits Of Betaine HCL
- Boosts Nutrient Absorption
- Defends Against Candida & Leaky Gut
- Improves Digestion, Gas, & Bloating
- Naturally Increases Stomach Acid
- Protects Against & Relieves GERD
Final Thoughts On Betaine HCL
Betaine HCL can be a godsend for those with low stomach acid or chronic gastrointestinal issues. Unfortunately, while this supplement can be hugely beneficial, it isn’t appropriate for those with active ulcers or anyone taking steroid, pain, or anti-inflammatory drugs.
