Heartburn - What Is It?

Heartburn is a common condition characterized by a burning sensation in the chest or throat. It occurs when stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, causing irritation and inflammation. Heartburn can be caused by several factors, including certain foods, beverages, and medications, as well as obesity, pregnancy, and other medical conditions that affect the digestive system.

Common foods that can cause heartburn include:

  • Spicy and acidic foods
  • Fried and fatty foods
  • Carbonated drinks and caffeine-containing beverages
  • Onions, garlic, and other foods with a strong odour
  • Chocolate and peppermint
  • Alcohol and tobacco

Heartburn symptoms can range from mild to severe and may include a burning or sour taste in the mouth, a feeling of fullness in the chest or abdomen, and difficulty swallowing.

Treatment options typically include lifestyle changes, over-the-counter medications, and sometimes prescription medications or fundoplication surgery, which entails wrapping the top of the stomach around the lower esophageal sphincter to tighten the muscle and prevent reflux. There are also a lot of effective natural solutions that can help manage the symptoms of heartburn and, in many instances, even help reverse heartburn by optimizing gut health.

Natural Solutions For Heartburn

  • Activated Charcoal – is a substance that does not get absorbed by the gut, so once it is swallowed, it reaches the intestines intact. It can absorb toxins and intestinal gases in the digestive tract, relieving uncomfortable GI symptoms.

  • Baking Soda – can help neutralize stomach acid. Mix half a teaspoon of baking soda with a glass of water and drink it slowly.

  • Bitters – are combinations of bitter botanicals (herbs, spices, barks, fruits, flowers, and roots) that stimulate the secretion of digestive juices to promote better digestion and relieve GI symptoms such as indigestion, gas, bloating, and flatulence.

  • Cinnamon – a classic of Traditional Chinese Medicine- helps calm the digestive tract and decreases gas pains. It is a natural antispasmodic that reduces gas formation when taken with food.

  • Digestive Enzymes – a full-spectrum digestive enzyme supplement that contains lactase to break down lactose in dairy, lipase to break down fats, amylase to break down starches and protease to break down proteins, promotes optimal digestive health and helps soothe GI symptoms like gas and bloating.

  • Fennel Seeds / Fennel Essential Oil – boast antiseptic properties; known to relieve constipation, flatulence, bloating, gas pains, and digestive upset.

  • Ginger – has potent anti-inflammatory properties, aiding digestion and reducing gas formation. It also helps alleviate nausea.

  • Licorice Root – can help increase mucus production, which can protect the lining of the esophagus from stomach acid.

  • Peppermint – natural antispasmodic; helps soothe stomach aches and gas pains. Helps calm the digestive tract, reducing the spasms that cause gas buildup.

  • Probiotics–friendly bacteria help balance the gut flora, which enables you to digest foods without causing gas pains, bloating, or cramping.

Managing This Concern

Medications for heartburn come in various forms, including antacids, H2 blockers, and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). Conventionally available antacids, such as Tums or Rolaids, neutralize stomach acid, providing quick but short-term relief. H2 blockers, such as ranitidine or famotidine, reduce the amount of acid the stomach produces, providing longer-lasting relief than antacids. PPIs, such as omeprazole or esomeprazole, also reduce stomach acid production and are typically used for more severe or chronic cases of heartburn. Unfortunately, these medications can have a variety of side effects. For instance, antacids often cause constipation and diarrhea; H2 blockers can cause headache, dizziness, constipation, diarrhea, and nausea; Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) can cause headache, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. And long-term use of PPIs can increase your risk of fractures, kidney disease, and infections.

Making lifestyle changes such as avoiding trigger foods, eating smaller meals, and not lying down immediately after eating, alongside natural digestive health supplements, is likely the best way to help manage heartburn and, in many cases, reverse heartburn in otherwise healthy individuals.
