Sea Kelp & Seaweed Supplements

While many people may associate seaweed exclusively with Asian culture, most specifically with sushi, it is in fact, a superfood that should be a staple in everyone’s diet. The term seaweed (or macroalgae), refers to thousands of species of macroscopic, multicellular, marine algae. Some of the most common types of these include sea kelp, nori, wakame, kombu, dulse, and blue-green algae, such as spirulina and chlorella. Seaweed in general contains protein, carbohydrates, fibre, and a range of polyunsaturated fatty acids. They are also rich natural sources of essential vitamins, minerals (most notably iodine), and antioxidants, and an excellent way to bolster one’s nutrient profile without packing on a lot of extra calories. It’s important to note that each type of seaweed contains a slightly different nutrient makeup, which means you should select a seaweed that best responds to your particular health status and needs. Reaching heights of more than 100 feet, kelp is the largest seaweed and the largest of all marine algae. Kelp belongs to the brown algae class and differs slightly in colour, flavour, and nutrient profile from the forms of seaweed we typically find in diet (think nori in sushi), and is especially nutrient-dense, which is why it is often sold in supplement form.

Benefits of Seaweed

  • Great Source of Iodine
  • Gut-Healthy Prebiotic Fibre
  • Improves Blood Sugar Metabolism
  • Stimulates Weight Loss
  • Supports Thyroid Function

How Does Sea Kelp Support Health?

Because it is highly nutritious, your naturopath may recommend incorporating seaweed into your diet to improve your overall nutritional profile and improve blood sugar metabolism. Because of its high iodine content, kelp supplementation may also be recommended to help stimulate an under active thyroid, an increasingly prevalent problem, which can cause symptoms such as fatigue, cold intolerance, weight gain, foggy brain, menstrual irregularities, and sore muscles and joints. Seaweed and kelp may also be recommended along with a comprehensive weight loss program which includes a reduction in calories and an increase in physical activity, because of its high dietary fibre content which helps delay stomach emptying and the transmission of hunger signalling to the brain. As a natural anti-inflammatory, kelp supplements may also be suggested to help support overall gut, hair, skin, and nail health.

Sea Kelp & Seaweed Supplements

Various forms of seaweed can be purchased in raw, cooked, or powdered form. In supplement form, kelp is the primary seaweed used and is readily availably either powdered in capsules or concentrated liquid form. Supplements typically provide somewhere around 600 mg of kelp, containing about 150 to 650 mcg of iodine. Always follow the dosing instructions listed on the product label.

Final Thoughts

Because seaweed can absorb whatever minerals are present in the water that surrounds them, it’s important to look for products that state they’re organic seaweed, whether as food or in supplement form, to make sure you aren’t exposing yourself to heavy metals or other contaminants. It’s also important to understand that while seaweed is highly nutritious, and provides a potent dose of iodine, consuming too much of this key trace element can have adverse effects such as hyperthyroidism and certain forms of thyroid cancer. This is why it’s best to consume moderate amounts of seaweed, and to rely on a supplement when aiming for therapeutic doses, so you're better able to control how much iodine you're taking in.
