Cholesterol Supplements For The Heart
Though it mostly gets a bad rap, cholesterol is an essential molecule that plays a crucial role in the functioning of many aspects of the human body. Indeed, though long demonized for its association with heart disease, cholesterol is, in fact, a multifaceted compound that fulfils many critical physiological processes in the body. Simply put, cholesterol is indispensable, and without it, the body could not accomplish some of its most fundamental tasks, such as making hormones and building cells. So, what exactly is cholesterol and what supplements help control it?
What Is Cholesterol
Cholesterol is a type of lipid, a waxy, fat-like substance found in every one of our cells. It is a crucial component of cell membranes, where it helps maintain their fluidity and structural integrity. Cholesterol is also a precursor for the synthesis of steroid hormones, including cortisol, aldosterone, and sex hormones (estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone). These hormones are essential in various physiological processes, including metabolism, stress response, and reproduction. Moreover, cholesterol is required to synthesize vitamin D, vital for calcium absorption and bone health. Cholesterol is also a key component in producing bile acids in the liver, which are critical to the digestion and absorption of dietary fats. And this barely scratches the surface of cholesterol's important roles in the body.
How High Cholesterol Effects Your Health
While cholesterol is indeed indispensable for the body, imbalances in its levels can have dramatic health implications, which is why many are turning to cholesterol supporting supplements. Elevated LDL (bad) cholesterol is associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis and heart disease. On the other hand, HDL (good) cholesterol has been shown to help remove excess cholesterol from the bloodstream, reducing the risk of plaque formation in arteries. As such, it isn't one number that matters, but our total level of cholesterol, our levels of LDL cholesterol, and our levels of HDL cholesterol.
Sources of Cholesterol
Foods that contain the most cholesterol are typically animal-based. Among these, organ meats such as liver and kidney rank highest in cholesterol content, followed by egg yolks, which have long been associated with dietary cholesterol. Shellfish, like shrimp and lobster, are also relatively high in cholesterol. However, it's important to note that while these foods do contain dietary cholesterol, their impact on raising levels of bad cholesterol varies. The foods that tend to cause the most significant spikes in bad cholesterol are those high in saturated and trans fats. These include fatty cuts of red meat, processed meats like sausages and bacon, butter, full-fat dairy products, and certain commercially baked goods. Consuming these foods in excess can dramatically increase LDL cholesterol levels and increase one's risk of heart disease.
How To Maintain Healthy Cholesterol
A combination of lifestyle choices, including a balanced diet, is crucial for effective cholesterol management. The diet should be low in saturated and trans fats while rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Regular physical activity is also essential since it helps raise "good" HDL cholesterol and lower "bad" LDL cholesterol. Additionally, quitting smoking and moderating alcohol intake are necessary for effective cholesterol management and cardiovascular health. Finally, managing stress through relaxation techniques and adequate sleep are also key contributors to better cholesterol control. Cholesterol supporting supplements can also offer safe and effective support.
Cholesterol Support Supplements
While diet and lifestyle are the first places to start when it comes to managing cholesterol, dietary supplements can also offer potent support. Some of the most studied nutrients for cholesterol management include:
Plant Sterols and Stanols – These compounds, found naturally in certain plant-based foods, have a similar structure to cholesterol, so compete with it for absorption. This can help lower cholesterol absorption by up to 50%.
Fish Oil (Omega-3 Fatty Acids) – EFAs found in fatty fish like salmon and mackerel help lower triglycerides and reduce LDL cholesterol.
Soluble Fiber – Supplements like psyllium husk and glucomannan can effectively help reduce LDL cholesterol. They bind to cholesterol in the digestive tract, preventing its absorption.
Red Yeast Rice – Contains naturally occurring statins, similar to the cholesterol-lowering medications prescribed by doctors, but without the side effects.
Garlic – Garlic supplements have long been prized for their ability to lower cholesterol levels. In fact, studies have shown that garlic has the potential to reduce total cholesterol by up to 30mg per deciliter (mg/dL).
Other nutrients/extracts commonly seen in supplements for cholesterol management include niacin (Vitamin B3), artichoke leaf, green tea extract, cayenne, grapeseed, hawthorn, lecithin, serrapeptase, and, perhaps most notably, Strauss Heart Drops.
Buying Quality Cholesterol Supplements
When shopping for a quality supplement to help you manage your cholesterol levels, choose products from reputable manufacturers that adhere to stringent quality control standards. Third-party testing and certification should also be top of mind as this provides added assurance of a product’s purity and potency. Some of the most reputable brands on the market include Natural Factors, Naturopathic Labs, Strauss, AOR, CanPrev, Douglas Labs, Healthology, and more.
