What Causes Poor Circulation?

Circulatory health is a fundamental cornerstone of overall well-being, serving as the life-sustaining system that ensures the delivery of oxygen and vital nutrients to every cell in the body while simultaneously removing waste products. This complex network of blood vessels, the heart, and the blood itself plays a pivotal role in maintaining homeostasis and supporting the body's various functions. But what causes poor circulation?

The implications of poor circulation are far-reaching, affecting not only your cardiovascular system but also extending to impact other bodily systems, including the respiratory, nervous, and immune systems. When the circulatory system is compromised, health issues can arise, ranging from hypertension and heart disease to stroke and organ dysfunction. Therefore, knowing what causes poor circulation, prioritizing circulatory health is paramount for anyone hoping to lead a long, vibrant life and mitigate the risk of debilitating health conditions.

Basics Of Optimal Circulatory Health

Mitigating poor circulation and its causes calls for a multifaceted approach that includes a heart-healthy diet, emphasizing the consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats while limiting sodium, saturated and trans fats, and added sugars. Regular physical activity is equally important; it helps strengthen the heart, improve blood vessel flexibility, and manage weight. Avoiding smoking and limiting alcohol intake are also vital for reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Additionally, managing stress through relaxation techniques and adequate sleep is essential, as chronic stress can negatively impact blood pressure and overall heart health. Vitamin supplements can also play an important role in maintaining healthy circulatory function.

Supplements To Enhance Circulation

There's a variety of circulatory supplements that can help manage the causes of poor circulation. They are typically combinations of key nutrients shown to benefit heart health. Common ingredients include Omega-3 fatty acids, Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), vitamin C, vitamin E, garlic, cayenne, olive leaf, grapeseed, motherwort, horse chestnut, and others.

These supplements come in various forms, such as capsules, softgels, or liquid extracts, allowing individuals to choose the most convenient option for their needs.

Key Health Benefits Of Poor Circulation Supporting Supplements

  • Enhanced Blood Flow
  • Improved Cardiovascular Function
  • Lower Blood Pressure / Cholesterol Management
  • Promote Healthy Arteries
  • Reduced Risk of Blood Clots

Things To Consider When Shopping For Supplements To Help Poor Circulation

Before shopping for supplements to support your circulatory health, it’s important to understand that two distinct conditions can be caused by poor circulation - Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) and Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI). Each of these calls for different supportive supplements. For instance:

Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) primarily affects the arteries responsible for carrying oxygen-rich blood away from the heart to various parts of the body, including the internal organs and extremities (arms and legs). It is often caused by atherosclerosis, wherein fatty deposits (plaque) build up in the arterial walls, narrowing or blocking the arteries. This reduces blood flow to the affected areas. Common symptoms of PAD include pain, cramping, or numbness in the legs during physical activity (claudication), slow-healing wounds or ulcers on the feet or legs, and coldness or colour changes in the limbs.

PAD responds well to Omega-3 fatty acids, Vitamin D, L-arginine, Horse Chestnut, Ginkgo Biloba, B Vitamins, and Garlic.

Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) primarily affects the venous system, which carries oxygen-poor blood from the body's tissues back to the heart. In CVI, the veins cannot effectively pump blood back to the heart, leading to blood pooling in the lower extremities. This condition is often caused by damaged or weakened vein valves resulting from obesity, pregnancy, prolonged sitting or standing, and deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Symptoms of CVI include the development of varicose veins, leg swelling, aching or pain in the legs, and skin changes, such as darkening or ulceration.

CVI responds exceptionally well to Horse Chestnut, Diosmin and Hesperidin, Butcher’s Broom, Grapeseed Extract, Pycnogenol, Vitamin C, and Omega-3 Fatty Acids.

If you aren't sure which supplement is best for you, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner for personalized guidance.
