Cold Sores

A cold sore often begins with a tingling or burning sensation around the lips. The sore begins to develop as an itchy red bump and eventually forms a fluid filled blister. When the blister breaks and forms a crust the healing has begun and it is no longer contagious. It usually heals without scarring. The duration of breakout is usually 10 days. Occasionally multiple sores can develop with fatigue and a mild fever

Also increase the lysine content of the diet because lysine inhibits herpes virus replication. Lysine rich foods include fish especially halibut, shrimp, poultry, milk, lima beans, mung bean sprouts and yeast.

Lysine: Help for Cold Sores

Lysine plays an important role in the metabolism of protein, carbohydrates and fatty acids. Thus it builds muscle (athletic enhancement) and rebuilds muscle after periods of illness or inactivity. It is also a component of connective tissue and brain chemicals.

Lysine is involved in growth and bone development because it increases the absorption and deposition of calcium. Lysine and another amino acid, methionine, forms carnitine. Carnitine helps cells use fats for energy production. By competing with arginine for absorption, lysine limits the reproduction of herpes virus and prevents herpes outbreaks (cold sores).

The biologically active form of lysine is L-lysine. It is commonly found in capsules. It is often combined with vitamins and anti-viral agents for prevention of herpes outbreaks. Take amino acid supplements at least 1/2 hour before or after a meal to maximize their absorption.

Immune System Health

The immune system is the police force of the body. It is a complex system of cells that defend the body from invading organisms, regulate inflammation and control abnormal cell growth. Many organs are involved in the immune response, the bone marrow, lymphatic system, thymus, liver and spleen. Bone marrow produces red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.

The spleen is a location where immune cells can monitor the blood for foreign matter. It also speeds up red blood cell production and activates blood clotting. The liver can increase body temperature and induce sweating to help fight off infections. The thymus produces B cells, which make antibodies, and T cells, which are part of the immune response.

The immune system is capable of fighting off intruders and remembering them so that they are killed off quickly if they invade again. The immune system must be able to differentiate self from non-self in order to know what to attack. If it does not recognize the body's own tissue than autoimmune diseases occurs.

Support your immune system by:

  • Maintaining a positive attitude.
  • Eating a variety of natural, fresh, good quality foods.
  • Avoiding refined, processed and packaged foods.
  • Always replenishing friendly bacteria after antibiotic use.
  • Exercising regularly.
  • Avoiding sugar and other junk foods.
  • Using stress reducing techniques such as deep breathing.
  • Maintaining a regular sleep cycle.
