What are the Adrenals and what do they do?

The adrenals are two small glands the size of a grapes located on top of the kidneys. They are responsible for our body's fight-or-flight response and they help the body to cope with stress. Each adrenal gland has two compartments, the inner cortex and the outer cortex. The inner adrenal cortex regulates the secretion and regulation of two hormones called epinephrine and nor epinephrine that are responsible for the body's fight-or-flight response. The outer adrenal cortex is responsible for producing three major hormones:
-Cortisol (a major stress hormone, a natural glucocorticoid or steroid)
-Aldosterone (responsible for sodium and water retention)
-DHEA (is a hormone related to the area of the adrenals that produces the sex hormones)

What is Adrenal Fatigue?
Adrenal Fatigue is a common disorder that affects millions of people throughout North America. As described earlier, the adrenals are our 'fight or flight' glands, that help us to deal with stress - either immediate or chronic. Prolonged or overly intense stress (physical, mental or emotional) can lead to adrenal fatigue. For example, adrenal fatigue may develop as a result of chronic emotional stress or worry, long hours of work, surgery, poor nutrition, regular consumption of alcohol or medications or chemotherapy. Adrenal Fatigue is the consequence of the adrenal glands no longer being able to adequately meet the constant demands to perform. In our high-stress culture, the body's 'fight-or-flight' response is activated so often that eventually our adrenals become depleted and exhausted and fail to function appropriately.

Cortisol and its Functions
Cortisol is an important hormone involved in the stress response. It also helps to regulate glucose metabolism, blood pressure, the immune system, liver detoxification and inflammation. When the body is under stress, cortisol will be released. Cortisol, once released, will give the body a quick burst of energy for 'combat', heightened memory functions and increased immunity. As well, it helps the body to maintain homeostasis (balance and normal functioning) under stress.

In our high-stress culture, the body's 'fight-or-flight' response is activated so often that it doesn't always have a chance to return to normal. This results in chronic stress and chronically high levels of cortisol in the body.

What are "Adoptogens"?
Adaptogens are a class of nutrients that help us cope with all stressors; they activate the whole-body, non-specific defense redirecting the body's resources to provide energy for active engagement with all of life's struggles - physical, emotional, and environmental. Adaptogens promote balance in the body, and enhance our ability to adjust our internal environment in response to changes in the external environment.
