What is Fenugreek?
Fenugreek is an annual Mediterranean and Asiatic herb with aromatic seeds. Fenugreek is used around the world as a culinary spice and food that is soothing to the stomach.
Today its main use is as a blood sugar regulator. Three constituents of fenugreek, tri-gonelline, nicotinic acid and coumarin decrease blood sugar levels. Fenugreek seeds are also high in fibre. Fibre helps to regulate blood sugar by slowing down the absorption of sugar in the intestines.
These properties make fenugreek an excellent choice for the treatment of diabetes and insulin resistance. Fenugreek is also used to increase the milk supply of nursing mothers. It is believed to do this by acting on the brain to stimulate the release of prolactin, the hormone responsible for milk production. Other reported uses for fenugreek are to lower cholesterol, thin mucus secretions and lubricate the intestines to relieve constipation.
What is Blessed Thistle?
Blessed thistle is believed to help with appetite, digestion and breast milk supply...
Blessed thistle is primarily used to increase the milk supply of nursing mothers. It is believed to do this by acting on the brain to stimulate the release of prolactin, the hormone responsible for milk production. Blessed thistle is a bitter herb. Think of the increase in saliva in your mouth when you taste something bitter. Bitter foods, or herbs, not only cause the release of saliva in your mouth but they also cause the release of digestive juices in your stomach.
Therefore blessed thistle is used for stimulating the appetite and soothing indigestion, which is often are caused by lack of digestive juices. It is also often used to help stimulate that body's production of gastric acids and the flow of bile which can improve digestion and assist the liver in the detoxifying process. Blessed thistle can also increase circulation and treat hormone imbalances. It may also increase memory (mommy brain) by delivering oxygen to the brain.
