More Than Bargained For
This was rather more - effective - than expected for g.i. function. Do not recommend for anyone particularly sensitive or when you can't afford to stay close to home for a while.

Releif for Gastro-Intestinal Pain
This is one of my "go-to"s for GI pain when it flares, especially if it's ulcer-type. Soothes the mucosal lining and alleviates discomfort when taken properly if irritation of the lining is what's causing the pain. I like the capsules which make it easier to take as am hesitant to mix the powder with water and potentially have to drink "sludge" or a chalky liquid. Note the bottle says to ensure drinking plenty of water with it, the powder in the capsule will absorb liquid and needs it to turn into it's gel-like substance.

Helps w/ Acute IBS Symptoms
You can't cure IBS, but you can manage it much better, and slippery elm was my first break through. This is also the best brand I've tried out of several others w/ either less benefits, to the bulk one I tried that made it worse. I think it's all about quality control as to why Nature's Way is the best brand. I don't get any mould, or at least minimal mould reactions to it. I tend to get cold after I take it, and that's a classic mould reaction for me. It is tree bark after all, and some companies don't refine that out well enough. The bulk one I tried, also sold here, I had to give away (to mom, now a fan), as I was getting aching fingers, toes and other more severe mould symptoms. My mom is not into my potions, but she was desperate and is a fan now, and she doesn't have mould allergies.

For my mother, she gets chronic loose stools and diarrhea to the point where she can't get to the throne quick enough at times. It's partly tied to the water pills she has to take to manage her heart issues, so no way around that. For me, I have fibromyalgia, and IBS is one of my most abysmal part of that. I get weak, shaky, freezing, headache, because I go back and forth, so toxins are released when I've had constipation for days to a week. Taking glutamine powder daily though has drastically reduced all the IBS symptoms and frequency. it's milder, less often when I get it and acute attacks w/ all the symptoms are thankfully rare now. I used to dread having a bowel movement, because it was going to be bad in some direction, and it could wipe me right out on the worst days, rendering me weak as a kitten, on my heating pad and barely able to eat. Acute IBS for me, feels like everything is like eating draino, I'm so bloated and sensitive. So the slippery elm can make an acute attach far less severe, or nip it in the bud altogether. I also don't get the trots anymore, and diarrhea days almost never happen due to this great product. I learned to let things settle at least half an hour, before taking it, to get best results.

Awesome product for gastric issues
I bought this after suffering with gastric issues for several weeks. I’d tried ginger, oregano oil, L-Glutamine, Pepto Bismol, all to no avail. Decided to try Slippery Elm and within days the almost constant nausea was gone. It works great for gastric issues, even better than ginger for easing nausea and as it is so reasonably priced, I make sure I always have some in my medicine cabinet. The other health benefits are an added bonus. I would highly recommend it!

What is Slippery Elm?

Slippery elm is a tree that is native to North America and was first used by native North Americans. They discovered that when the bark was mixed with water it formed a thick mucus-like substance. Slippery elm is a demulcent, an agent that coats and protects mucosal surfaces. The active components in slippery elm are large carbohydrate molecules. In the respiratory tract slippery elm decreases cough, speeds removal of mucus and helps to heal the tract. In the stomach and intestines slippery elm protects the lining from ulceration. Slippery elm also soothes the urinary tract and helps the skin to heal. Natural health practitioners recommend slippery elm for a variety of needs including sore throat, colds, coughs, bladder infections, digestive ulcers, burns, and wounds.

Slippery elm can be found in a variety of different forms including dried, powdered or encapsulated inner bark or liquid extract. It is often used as a lozenge, tea or drink. Topically slippery elm can be mixed with water and applied directly to the skin or onto a poultice. Slippery elm is found in formulas for cold or cough relief, urinary tract health and ulcers. When purchasing slippery elm use only the inner bark. The outer bark contains medicinal components may be harmful and may cause miscarriage. The harvesting of the inner bark of slippery elm usually results in the death of the tree. You may want to inquire about the source and farming practices of the manufacturer of your chosen product.

What is a Demulcent ?
A demulcent is a substance that is used to soothe the mucous membranes in the intestinal tract and stomach and also in the nose, mouth or throat.Demulcent herbs including marshmallow, slippery elm and fenugreek can help soothe and relax the intestine.
