New Roots Herbal is a Canadian supplement formulator that manufactures over 400 products. They are available in over 9,700 stores worldwide in more than 16 countries. In Canada, they sell exclusively to independent natural-product retailers, like National Nutrition.

New Roots Humble Beginnings
The New Roots brand originated in 1982 as New Roots Nutrition, a natural supplement retailer in Kitsilano BC.
By 1985, New Roots Herbal was born and they began formulating their natural health products in Montreal. Acidophilus Ultra was the first product, making them a pioneer for probiotics in the Canadian market.
In 2004, they hired their first scientist at their in-house lab, NHP Laboratories. Today, they currently have 22 scientists and are an ISO-accredited lab. Fast forward to 2021, and they have doubled the size of their existing facility and lab to 8,000 sqft.
A Quality Control Process Backed by Science
New Roots believes in the power of science. Their research team consists of 3 PhDs, 7 MSscs, and 12 BScs who spend over 880 hours a week on testing and research to ensure the purity of all products.
Every lot of each ingredient is tested three times for identity, contaminants, oxidation, purity, and potency. Some contaminants tested for, include mycotoxins, PCBs, over 80 pesticides, heavy metals, bacteria, mould and fungus.
The New Roots testing process involves three rounds. First, raw materials are identified, quarantined and put through the quality control analysis listed above. If they pass, formulas are then prepared.
During the preparation process, a sample of the in-process material is collected, quarantined and tested for quality. If that passes, the product is then bottled and labelled.
The final product is then quarantined, and a final quality control analysis is completed. If it passes a third time, the finished product is approved for sale. During this process, New Roots Herbal tests its delivery formats, such as capsules, softgels, and tablets. They are tested to make sure they dissolve where they are supposed to. Tablets should dissolve in the stomach, but enteric-coated capsules should only dissolve in the intestines. They perform these tests using a system that mimics the human digestive system.
