What is Horsetail?
Horsetail was traditionally used as a diuretic in spring tonics. Spring tonic herbal combinations provide a gentle cleanse of the body as it changes from the winter mode of storage and hibernation to the vital and energetic warm seasons. Horsetail also contains a significant amount of silica, which is considered an essential trace mineral for human health.Horsetail is commonly recommended by natural health care practitioners for support of bone and connective tissue, osteoporosis, poor growth of hair, skin and nails and swelling.
Silica
Silica forms structural components of bone and connective tissue, such as collagen. It is especially needed during the early phase of bone mineralization and is found in high concentrations in the bony growth plates. It also forms elastin, a connective tissue that is responsible for the elasticity of connective tissue found in the skin, lungs and blood vessels. Silica levels decline with age and a deficiency of silica may lead to degeneration of the vessels, bones and connective tissue that is commonly seen in the elderly.
Understanding Hair Loss
We naturally lose 50 to 100 hairs everyday. New strands should replace them. When the hair is not replaced, thinning, and eventually balding, results. The most common type of hair loss is male pattern baldness. It is thought that the follicles are programmed to stop hair production when there are high levels of male hormones. Women can experience a similar type of hair loss due to hormone changes (i.e.: postpartum and at menopause) but it is usually not as extensive.
Tough on Hair
There are many factors, other than hormones, that contribute to hair loss. They include heredity, aging, poor circulation, acute illness, malnutrition, radiation exposure, skin disease, high fever, iron deficiency, diabetes, hypothyroidism, stress, fungal infection and chemical hair dyes.
Healthy Hair The Natural Way- What's Important?
Most natural treatments for hair loss focus on optimizing the body's levels of the important nutrients it needs to maintain and stimulate the growth of healthy hair, and also on cleansing the scalp to ensure the health of hair follicles. In particular B complex vitamins, essential fats, the minerals iodine, selenium, and zinc, plus the amino acids methionine and cysteine are needed for optimum hair health. A deficiency in any of these can lead to dry, brittle falling hair.
