The Need for Kids
While your children are growing and maturing the nutrients they consumer play a critical role in their proper development both physically and mentally. These include healthy fats, especially the Omega 3 essential fatty acids DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) and EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid). Our bodies cannot manufacture these essential fats making our food supply the only source.
Unfortunately our modern diets often fall well short with 95% of our population consuming inadequate amounts of Omega 3. Many of us consume less than 10% of the desired amount.
This is of special concern for children. The growth of the human brain is typically complete by the age of 6, with 60% of it's weight being composed of fat, with a large part of it being DHA. It is now widely understood that cognitive ability and academic performance are significantly affected by EPA and DHA status.
DHA and EPA also help to support healthy immune and cardiovascular function. but in children they are especially beneficial for improving focus and concentration, and sharpening mental acuity. EFA's also have a positive impact on allergies, asthma and eczema.
Facts:
-Children ages 5-12 when given DHA, EPA and GLA had better reading and spelling scores.
-Studies in children with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) confirm that significant improvements are seen in children who consumer essential fatty acids compared to those who do not.
-Individuals with autism have an average of 23% lower DHA levels compared to normal, healthy persons.
An obvious strategy is to encourage our children to consume foods rich in Omega 3. Unfortunately plant sources (usually from seeds and nuts) rely on our bodies to convert the Omega 3 into DHA and EPA.
It is estimated that only 5-10% of plant source Omega 3 is successfully converted. While plant sources of Omega 3 are still sensible additions to any diet, the Omega 3 found in fish is a far more potent source. Is this case no conversion is necessary as it is already in the forms our bodies utilize (DHA and EPA). The challenge with fish is that not all children find it palatable. It is also an unfortunate reality that the levels of contaminants found in fish (especially in the oil) continue to rise.
