Back To Their Roots: The History of St. Francis Herb Farm
It all started in 1980 when the founders of St. Francis, Jeremy and Monique, received their Certificates of Herbology from the Academy of Botanical Medicine in Victoria, BC. In 1983, they opened a store where they produced their first herbal tinctures, propolis and echinacea.
Five years later they opened a second business and started selling their tinctures to naturopathic doctors on Vancouver Island. By the late 80’s they moved to a 172-acre farm in Ontario, where St. Francis Herb Farm was born.
By the early 1990’s their farm received organic certification, and they started getting their products into natural health stores. Fast forward to 2006, they became GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) licensed and their manufacturing facilities also became certified organic.
In more recent history, they moved to a 33,000 sqft facility, making them the largest manufacturing plant dedicated exclusively to herbs in Canada.

It all starts with the plant and how it’s harvested. St. Francis' farm is organically certified; therefore, all of their plants are grown without the use of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. They also ensure sustainability, soil fertility, and biological diversity. Aside from their organic farm, they source herbs from other local Canadian organic farmers if there’s a better option available.
Their 30+ years of knowledge in herbal medicine has helped the owners and operators of St. Francis harness their craft. It’s this expertise that helps them formulate superior herbal supplements. Some factors they regulate to optimize the quality of their crops are temperature control, length of maceration, and extraction methods.
The last step in their Holistic-Herb Approach relies on science. They have an ongoing partnership with the Biopharmaceutical Department at the University of Ottawa where they test their practices to make sure they will result in quality extraction.
Through this approach, they know that the quality of their herbs isn’t just about their potency, but about the care that’s put into the formulation process from farm to bottle.
