Don't Use Water on Your Face - Use This!
For years I have used Thayers witch hazel (aloe, plain, lavender, etc.) to cleanse my face. Every morning I put some on a flat cotton pad and gently massage. I leave my face slightly wet and then use my homemade lotions or pure oils (ie vitamin E). In my mid-60's and I have great skin thanks to Thayers!

Gentle and Calming
Nice light scent and helps calm my skin when wearing masks for long days at work, causing some skin irritation and blemishes. Definitely helps to combat this.

Witch Hazel

Witch hazel is a small shrub/tree with twisting stems and long forking branches. It has nothing to do with witches, but rather comes from the word 'wych', meaning a pliable branch, as it was used centuries ago to locate underground water and precious metals.

Witch hazel has well-known astringent properties, and therefore commonly used as a topical solution to treat skin irritations, to decrease bleeding, for bites, burns , poison ivy, inflamed eyes, headaches, muscle pains, back pain, sprains, bruises and arthritic joints. It can also be gargled to relieve mouth irritations or sore throat. Given its strong astringent properties, it is also widely used as a remedy for varicose veins and hemorrhoids, when applied topically to these areas. Studies have confirmed that extracts of witch hazel do act to constrict veins. As astringents can act as topical anti-inflammatories, witch hazel is basically indicated wherever and whenever there is inflammation due to irritation, injury, over use and more. It has also been shown to exhibit anti-viral activity against the herpes simplex virus.

Witch hazel contains a large amount of tannins, which give it its astringent, antiseptic and hemostatic properties, but also what can make it somewhat dangerous when taken internally, if not under the direct supervision of a healthcare practitioner. It is also high in flavonoids and essential oils. It has also been shown to have significant antioxidant effects.

Witch hazel can be found on its own as an un-distilled or distilled witch hazel water extract, or it is often combined in natural skin products, to help refine skin and tighten pores, or as a hemorrhoid treatment. Although witch hazel is generally recommended for external application, it has been used internally to treat bleeding, diarrhea and dysentery. Please consult a health care practitioner before using it for these purposes. As a topical remedy, witch hazel can be applied to affected areas twice daily or as needed.

Lavender

Lavender oil is frequently added to skin products like balms, salves, perfumes, and cosmetics. It can be used as an antiseptic to clean minor injuries and burns. It is also a pain reliever and can be applied topically to treat insect bites and stings. When added to massage oil, lavender can help to relieve joint and muscle pain. It has also been shown to be helpful in healing episiotomy wounds after childbirth. As with most essential oils, lavender oil should be diluted in a carrier oil to reduce the risk of damage to the skin.

Hormonal Effects
Lavender can have a weak estrogenic effect. This effect becomes particularly prevalent in children whose sex hormone levels are still low. Lavender oil in shampoos and lotions has been implicated to have some hormonal effects in children. There have been suggestions that in a few cases lavender caused abnormal breast development in young boys, and early puberty in young girls. Ongoing use of lavender essential oil in young children is not recommended until further research can clarify this effect. It is unlikely that this effect is strong enough to affect adults with far greater hormone production of their own.

Hair Growth
Scientific research has shown that the application of a mixture of essential oils to alopecia areata can actually cause a return of hair growth by up to 44%. The mixture is 3 drops of lavender oil, 3 drops of rosemary oil, 2 drops of thyme oil, and 2 drops of cedarwood, all mixed into jojoba (carrier) oil and 20ml of grapeseed oil. This mixture is applied to any bald spots and massaged in each night. Effects are seen over a period of a few weeks.

How can I use lavender?
Lavender can be found as an essential oil that can be diluted in a carrier oil (or in a 1:10 dilution in water) and used topically for relaxation and pain relief, or can be vaporized for aromatherapeutic effect. A few drops of this oil can be added to hot water or a bath to promote relaxation. Flowerheads can be added to a cup of boiling water to make a relaxing tea to promote sleep. Commercially made tea bags are also available. Dried bunches of lavender can be stored with clothing or hung to deter insects. Lavender is commonly found in a variety of cosmetic and moisturizing products, deodorants, and bath salts.
