Vegan Vitamin D Supplements
You would have to have been living under a rock these last few years not to have heard of the many benefits that vitamin D offers; most notably to bone health, as well as to immune function in general. There has been so much buzz around vitamin D in fact, that it is today among the most widely sold supplements in North America, and widely available in a range of potencies, forms, and formats. With so many choices, including vegan vitamin d, so how do you know what’s right for you?
The most common form of vitamin D is called vitamin D3, or cholecalciferol, and is typically sourced from the cholesterol found in sheep’s wool. This form of D is considered by most to be the natural and active form of vitamin D because it is the same kind our bodies can synthesize from exposure to sunlight. Cholecalciferol from lanolin also happens to be extremely well-absorbed, remains active for a long time inside the body, and can rapidly increase serum concentrations of vitamin D. Of course, what it is sourced from, lanolin, does not make it an ideal supplement solution for everyone.
Fortunately, vegan vitamin supplements are also widely available and gaining in popularity too, along with veganism in general, which itself has increased 300% from 2004 to 2019! Indeed vegan vitamin D, sourced from algae, provides high quality, D3 (cholecalciferol), that offers the same benefits as D3 from lanolin, i.e. great absorption and retention, and the ability to raise blood levels of vitamin D just as effectively lanolin-based D3. In addition, one of the most obvious benefits of vegan vitamin D is that because it does not come from animals, it is a far more sustainable source of vitamin D, which does not add to the environment’s already heavy burden.

Getting The Most Out of Your Vegan Vitamin D
Because vegan D comes from a plant source, it is invariably also a purer source, that hasn’t been exposed to the pesticides and added hormones that lanolin may have been. Algae also grow naturally and abundantly, so harvesting it doesn't harm the environment, making vegan D an environmentally conscious choice that isn’t just suitable for vegans.
To enhance absorption, take your vegan vitamin D supplement with a meal or a snack. Foods high in fat, such as seeds, nuts, and avocados, are ideal choices since vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that requires fats to be digested properly.
