CALENDULA/MARIGOLD
Calendula is most often used externally to help with skin conditions...
Marigold flowers are a common sight in our gardens. Historically these flowers were thought to lift the spirits and encourage cheerfulness. Medicinally calendula is used to decrease inflammation and stimulate the growth of skin and mucus membranes. Extracts of calendula have also been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria and viruses. All of these properties make calendula an excellent wound healer and a good addition to your first aid kit.
Calendula is commonly used for burns, cuts, rashes, acne, eczema, psoriasis and any other skin conditions. Calendula can be gargled to heal sores or abrasions in the mouth. It is also reported to stop toothaches. Internally calendula can be used to soothe the stomach lining and may be recommended for gastritis and stomach ulcers.
Calendula is most commonly used externally and is found in many salves and creams. Dried calendula can be made into a tea and used a wash or soaked into a poultice. For internal use calendula is found in capsules or tincture.
Calendula should not be used internally in pregnancy because it may lead to miscarriage. Calendula is a member of the ragweed family and should be used with caution by sensitive individuals.
