What is Acai Berry?
Acai berry (pronounced "AH-sigh-EE") is a palm tree native to Central and South America. The berries these trees produce are nutrient-rich, especially in antioxidants. They are even richer in phytonutrient antioxidants than blueberries. During an appearance on the Oprah Winfrey show, Dr. Nicholas Perricone promoted Acai berry juice as a "Superfood for Age-Defying Beauty." Acai has since rocketed into the spotlight in North America.
How is Acai Berry Juice Used?
People in Siuth America use acai in desserts, juices, and liqeurs. Manufacturers sell acai as frozen pulp, juice, beverages, foods, cosmetics, and supplements. Although initially touted as a weight loss aid, recent research has debunked that myth. Now it is generally promoted as a superfruit. This is because of its extremely rich antioxidant content and high levels of omega fats.
What Are Antioxidants?
Antioxidants have the ability to neutralize free radicals in the body. Free radicals are reactive substances that damage nutrients and body tissues. Air pollution, UV rays, cigarette smoke, and normal metabolism expose us to free radicals. This damage can result in cancer, cardiovascular disease, and the visible signs of aging. Researchers extensively tested acai's antioxidant activity after its rise in popularity. They found it possesses exceptionally high antioxidant capacity.
- This is the reason it has been touted to have anti-aging effects.
- Also, the antioxidants found in Acai have been shown to be easily absorbed by our bodies
- Some studies show that acai fruit pulp has a very high antioxidant capacity with even more antioxidant content than cranberry, raspberry, blackberry, strawberry, or blueberry. Studies are ongoing, though, and the jury is still out.
Acai Berry Powder & Weightloss Hype
Although Acai has had celebrity endorsement and a lot of media hype, and despite a relatively large number of scientific studies, there is no scientific evidence that acai consumption affects body weight or promotes weight loss. The only benefits attributed to Acai in this context are the high nutrient and antioxidant content, which can help enrich a calorie-restricted diet.
Why are Acai Berries used in Beauty Products?
Some cosmetics and beauty products contain acai oil in the ingredient list. That's because acai oil is a powerhouse of antioxidants that can help reduce free radical skin damage. Studies show that acai oil may be a safe alternative to other tropical oils used in beauty products such as facial and body creams, anti-aging skin therapies, shampoos, and conditioners. Acai oil may have a long shelf life because it retains high antioxidant levels during storage.
How Much Acai Powder Per Day?
Manufacturers sell acai as frozen pulp, juice, powder, and commercial beverages. Supplement makers offer açai in powders, capsules, and antioxidant or weight management formulas. Acai juice contains high levels of antioxidants. Most adults can safely consume up to teo cups daily. Powdered extract allows for further concentration of the Acai, resulting in an overall more concentrated antioxidant. Recent research hshows that acai supplements vary in quality. Freeze-dried acai retains significantly more antioxidants than frozen or air-dried forms. Dosage recommendations depend on the product but are generally 1,000-2,000mg of dried acai extract or 1-2 Tablespoons of liquid extract per day.

I have heard about acai and knew it was a powerful antioxidant, but knowing how that helps my health is something I learned from reading this article. I will have to try it now. It would be helpful to know how much of the acai berry powder I should use each day versus the capsules or pure acai juice.

Hello Alk177,
Indeed, Acai is a Brazilian superfood and for good reason. It is packed with healthy fats, nutrients and is a powerhouse of an antioxidant. You can add it to your smoothies, baking or make a smoothie bowl for breakfast or snack!
Enjoy.
The chart provided is great for thinking about practically using acai!: I like that this chart includes known synergies, optimal dosage, important considerations, and a link to products you sell which contain acai. Also, I appreciate you dispelling the hype around certain acai benefits. That said, recipes would have been appreciated because these would be helpful in thinking about how to incorporate acai into one's daily lifestyle-all I can think of for acai is smoothies; I would love to learn about various non-smoothie acai recipes to work this "superfood" into the diet!
Hello, Rachel,
Acai is an amazing superfood with many benefits as this article outlines. It is great when added to smoothies, or you can make a smoothie bowl by adding less liquid to your smoothie recipe to make it a thicker consistency. You can also add it to our vegan, natural fruit roll up recipe where it suggests adding protein powder:

Enjoy!
I have never heard the flavor of acai described before but I think that you almost got it: "blackberry with a tinge of blueberry" indeed hits on the key fruity notes. And, I would be in the mix of some people that say it also has an aftertaste of chocolate. I would, though, also note that there is an almost acrid bitterness to it, distinct from the bitter of chocolate: it is a fruity bitterness, and, yes, it is as equally unpleasant as it is oddly refreshing. I think it is the bitter aspect, too, that often prevents acai from being a favorite flavor for fruit drinks/smoothies/other fruit preparations.
Hello Rachel,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on açai and the flavour profile you taste with it. It's definitely a complex palate.
Have a healthy day!
Acai is an anti oxidant I take with other berries in a smoothie. Moringa goes well with this. I have both the tea and the capsules. I sometimes add the Moringa powder into the Acai smoothie. Goji also goes well here. Blueberries as well. This Acai berry is good for anti aging. It goes well with Vitamin C, I add lemons in there. In order to get the Vitamin E, I add nuts and seeds, also goes well with Acai and other berries. Brazil nuts will give you the Selenium you need (only 2 is enough).
thanks a lot
