Osteoporosis Support: Strengthening Bones Naturally

Osteoporosis is a geriatric disease with a pediatric cause. Most people affected by osteoporosis experience no symptoms until eventually, they experience their first bone fracture. Sadly, osteoporosis is not uncommon, affecting over 2.2 million (or 11.9%) Canadians 40 years and older; 80% being women. Fortunately, there are things you can do to help prevent osteoporosis, as well as to slow down the progression, and maintain as much bone mass as possible. Supplementation is a great way to ensure you’re topped up on all the bone essentials.

Essential Nutrients for Osteoporosis Prevention and Support

Calcium

Calcium supplements are usually the first thing we think about when we think of bones. Calcium is crucial to building bones and maintaining bone mass throughout life. Unfortunately, most experts agree that most people do not get adequate calcium in their diet. And of the calcium consumed, only about 15% to 20% is absorbed, so proper supplementation is key.

Magnesium

When it comes to bones, calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D are interdependent and must be supplied in adequate quantities, as well as in the correct ratios. Adequate intake of magnesium is essential for the absorption and metabolism of calcium, as well as that of vitamin D. Indeed, magnesium converts vitamin D into its active form, so it can enhance calcium absorption in the gut.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D (commonly known as the “sunshine vitamin”), functions more like a hormone than a vitamin and is produced in the skin in response to the sun’s rays. Vitamin D is essential to bone health because it increases calcium absorption, as well as improves muscle function, which can help improve balance and decrease the chance of falls and fractures. Unfortunately, vitamin D is one of the four most common nutrient deficiencies in Canada, so supplementation is essential for most.

Silica

While silica is often associated with hair, skin, and nails, it also offers very distinct benefits to bones. Silica boosts the production of osteoblasts (bone-building cells) and decreases the number of osteoclasts (cells that break down bones). Silica enhances the body’s production of collagen, which has a direct effect on bone mineral density.

Boron

Boron supports bone growth, development, maintenance, and works in tandem with other bone essentials. It also enhances bone absorption of estrogen and vitamin D, as well as reduces calcium loss.

Zinc

Another essential mineral, zinc is required for normal skeletal growth and development, and bone homeostasis. Research has also shown that zinc may promote bone regeneration.

Vitamin K2

Vitamin K2 is increasingly important to bone health as we age. Studies have shown that K2 helps reduce bone loss in postmenopausal women, increases bone mineral density in osteoporotic people, and reduces the frequency of fractures.

Identifying Who Benefits Most from Osteoporosis Support Supplements

Health care practitioners typically recommend osteoporosis support nutrients (likely as part of complex bone health formulas) to women as they enter the perimenopausal phase 35-50 years old, and after menopause. However, keep in mind that bones are constantly being broken down and remodeled across the life span, so making sure your body is getting all of the essential bone nutrients at every life stage will ensure strong and healthy bones well into old age.

Discover Which Form Of These Nutrients Are Better Absorbed To Maximize Bone Health Benefits

When it comes to supplements, not all vitamins and minerals are created equal. This is also true of osteoporosis support supplements that should be taken in their most bioavailable, absorbable, and therapeutic forms to yield optimal results. Here’s what to look for:

Calcium Hydroxyapatite

  • The clinical form of calcium – recommended in osteoporosis and weak bones.
  • Offers enhanced absorption and has been shown to slow osteoporosis, as well as accelerate fracture healing and repair.
  • The recommended dose for adults is 1,000 mg and 1,200mg for women after age 50.

Magnesium Bisglycinate

This clinical form of magnesium is considered a superior magnesium supplement. It offers enhanced bioavailability and absorption, and is especially fast-acting, well-tolerated, and does not cause loose stools, like many other forms of magnesium.

  • The recommended daily dose for magnesium is usually in the 310 - 420 mg range; however, for osteoporosis, this may be higher.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is available as either D2 or D3; however, it's important to know that D3 is considered the preferred "active form” of vitamin D.

  •  The recommended dose of Vitamin D is 400 – 1,000 IU daily; however, those over age 50 and those at risk of osteoporosis, should aim for 800 – 2,000 IU daily. Your practitioner may recommend a higher dose for those with osteoporosis.

Silica

When it comes to silica there is something for everyone. Silica can come from a variety of sources including quartz, fossilized plants, horsetail, and bamboo, and are all equally effective to support bone health.

  • The recommended daily dose of silica is in the 9 - 14 mg range.

Boron

Boron citrate, chelate, and glycinate are some of the most bioavailable forms of boron.

  • Boron supplements (as standalone or as part of complex formulas) are typically offered in 1.5 to 6 mg potency, and most experts suggest 3 - 5mg of boron daily for the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis.

Zinc

Zinc supplements are widely available in a variety of forms. Look for zinc chelate, bisglycinate, and picolinate for optimal bioavailability.

  • The recommended daily dose of zinc for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis will typically be 30 - 50 mg daily.

Vitamin K2

Vitamin K is available as either K1 or K2, however, K2 is far better absorbed.

  • The recommended dose of K2 for the treatment of osteoporosis may be as high as 45 mg daily (a dose far higher than the recommended daily intake).
