  Indole-3-Carbinolis a naturally occurring component of the cruciferae vegetable family (cabbage, radishes, cauliflower and brussel sprouts). Animal and human studies have identified a number of beneficial effects including its ability to improve estrogen me- tabolism. it appears that indole-3-carbinol aids estrogen detoxification by increasing the 2/16 hydroxyestrone ratio. An increase in 16-hydroxyestrone has been linked to premen- strual symptoms, PcoS, cervical dysplasia and the development of fibroids, whereas 2-hydroxyestrone has been shown to have no such effects. oral supplementation with indole-3-carbinol has been found in several clinical trials to increase the 2-hydroxylation of estrogens with no toxicity reported at the dosages used.
  
  Chasteberryhas been used traditionally to treat premenstrual syndrome. research suggests that chasteberry may influence both estrogen and progesterone. the linoleic acid constituent of chasteberry appears to have a mild estrogenic effect on beta estrogen receptors in the heart, vasculature, bone and bladder. research trials dem- onstrate that PMS symptoms generally improve significantly when using chasteberry versus placebo. the symptoms that improved the most were irritability, mood, head- aches and breast tenderness. Studies in Germany indicate that chasteberry offers at least some relief from PMS symptoms in about 90% of women and in one-third of this group, symptoms disappeared. chasteberry is believed to balance hormones via the pituitary and hypothalamus glands where a number of the female hormones are produced and regulated. it acts on these glands to increase luteinizing hormone (lH) production and to mildly inhibit the release of follicle stimulating hormone (fSH). the result is a shift in the ratio of estrogen to progesterone, in favour of progesterone, thus more optimally balancing the estrogen to progesterone ratio.
  
  Magnesiumsupplementation may be helpful in relieving PMS symptoms. in women with PMS, it has been found that Magnesium levels in erythrocytes and leukocytes were lower than in non-PMS women. Magnesium is involved in the activity of serotonin, vascular contraction, neuromuscular function and membrane stability. in studies using magne- sium supplementation for women with PMS, significant improvements in symptoms over several cycles were observed. Magnesium in the glycinate form is extremely well tolerated and absorbed by the tissues.
  
  Vitamin B6has been shown to assist in reducing breast pain and tenderness and PMS related depression. dopamine levels in the brain can be depleted when there is a defi- ciency of vitamin B6. Vitamin B6 aids in the production of dopamine in the hypothalamus which in turn inhibits the release of prolactin. An increase in prolactin can cause breast swelling. low vitamin B6 levels can also inhibit the kidney's ability to get rid of sodium re- sulting in water retention. When combined with magnesium, vitamin B6 has been shown to reduce PMS symptoms such as nervous tension, mood swings, irritability or anxiety.
  
  Black Cohoshcontains a significant amount of isoflavones and is used in both traditional and modern Herbal Medicine to reduce premenstrual and perimenopausal symptoms. Black cohosh may also be helpful for irregular bleeding and headaches.
  Vitamin D3 has been associated with decreased PMS symptoms and a reduction in breast density.
