Great Way to Add More Calcium Citrate if Needed
I'm very happy with this product because sometimes I need to increase my calcium intake if I'm on medications that could affect my bone density.

This is only in addition to my regular intake of calcium citrate, which I get from SISU, and which already comes with magnesium oxide. When I take Calcium Factor, I take it twice a day, and add a tablet of magnesium oxide to approximate the 2:1 ratio I get from SISU, as well as the type of calcium and the type of magnesium that the SISU combination provides.

This is just for as long as I need to be on medication. Please note, however, that what you're getting from each Calcium Factor tablet here is 350 mg calcium citrate, as described on the bottle. That will only provide you about 21% of elemental calcium, so about 73.5 mg elemental calcium, NOT 350 mg elemental calcium, as it currently shows in the National Nutrition description.

I think it's a typo, so they should correct that so that people who need more elemental calcium don't think they're already getting the dosage they need. It's 350 mg of calcium citrate per tablet. Anyway, I really like getting some of my calcium citrate from this product, but of course I still combine it with magnesium oxide, as well as lots of Vitamin D, in order to facilitate absorption of the calcium and (maybe, because I'm not an expert) help with prevention of kidney stones, as well.

Calcium
Calcium is an important mineral for the optimal functioning of many body systems. Calcium is a major mineral found in the bones and teeth. Deficiency of calcium causes bone and joint diseases such as osteomalacia, osteoporosis and osteo-arthritis. It also leads to poor growth and poor bone density in children.Calcium also protects the body from heavy metal toxicity because if calcium is deficient lead is absorbed by the body and deposited in the teeth and bones.Supplyingoptimumlevelsof active and absorbable calcium is crucial for maintaining bone mass.

Calcium also helps with insomnia and muscle cramps by relaxing the muscles. Calcium lowers cholesterol, by inhibiting plaque formation, and lowers blood pressure, by ensuring the proper functioning of the arterial muscles. Calcium is pulled out of the bones when the body becomes too acidic. This can occur due to the use of some medications, poor diet or when the body is in a state of inflammation, like rheumatoid arthritis or lupus. Calcium is involved at the level of the cell with the structure of the RNA and DNA molecules and the activation of enzymes for the use of fats.

Bone Health
An adult human has 206 bones, which are constantly being renewed and remodelled. Bones perform several important roles in the body. Bones form a framework that supports the body and protects soft organs. They are an essential part of movement because muscles attach here and the arrangement of bones determines the type of movement that can be done.Bones are important storehouses of minerals, including the major buffer, calcium. They also contain an inner core of marrow that produces blood and immune cells.

Most people do not think about bone health until they are in their later years. This is a mistake because significant increases in bone density can only be made in childhood or early adulthood (up to age 30). For the remainder of our lives the goal is to maintain our bones.

Help Maintain Healthy Bones by:
  • Taking a high quality Calcium Supplement.
  • Eating plenty of vegetables (for their high mineral content).
  • Avoiding coffee and other caffeinated beverages (they leach calcium from the bones).
  • Exercising regularly to maintain bone mass.
  • Tracking your pH and maintaining an alkaline state.
  • Balance hormones with essential fatty acids and herbs.

Osteoporosis
Bone loss is a major concern for both women and men, but more so for women (due to hormonal factors) who generally lose more bone mass than men. Your bones need to be given adequate levels of the nutrients that they need to repair themselves. When you are deficient (or due to other aggravating factors) loss of bone mass results.

Clinically, osteoporosis is a loss of bone density that surpasses the amount that normally occurs due to aging. The spine and hips are the most vulnerable areas. Women are most commonly affected especially after menopause when they lose the protective effect of estrogen. As the bones become brittle they fracture and collapse more easily. The degeneration results in pain and decreased mobility.

Osteoporosis is caused by a number of factors including a sedentary lifestyle, lack of minerals, hormonal changes, hypothyroidism, smoking, a high protein diet, alcohol intake, caffeine intake and stress. Long term use of the following medications decreases bone density - antacids, blood thinners, diuretics, anti-seizure medication, ulcer medication and all corticosteroids.
