amino acids

Protein is the second most abundant substance in our body, only water is more plentiful. Proteins are composed of amino acids, linked together by peptide bonds. When we eat protein the body must break these bonds in the digestive tract. Then single amino acids, or amino acids in short chains, are absorbed into the body, where they are reassembled into whatever substance the body needs.

Some amino acids can be manufactured in the body from other amino acids and are thus called non-essential. They are alanine, aspartic acid, arginine, citrulline, glutamic acid, glycine, hydroxyglumatic acid, hydroxyproline, norleucine, proline, and serine.

The amino acids that the body cannot produce and need to be taken in through the diet are called essential. They are histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, cysteine, phenylalanine, tyrosine, threonine, tryptophan, and valine. Branched chain amino acids have a branch in their structure. They are leucine, isoleucine and valine.

Phosphorus, Magnesium & Manganese

Phosphorus is used for more biological processes than any other mineral. It is required for the production of ATP, the molecule which stores and transports energy in the cell. In the blood stream phosphorus is used as a buffer to maintain the body's acid/base balance. Phosphorus makes up the backbone of DNA and RNA, our genetic material.

Without magnesium the transmission of nerve and muscle impulses is compromised. This can lead to nervous system disorders, muscle weakness or contraction, cramps and spasms. As an example, magnesium has been shown to decrease menstrual pain by relaxing the uterine muscles. In pregnancy, magnesium acts as a uterine relaxant and can prevent premature labour.

Manganese is a trace mineral , which means that it is only needed in very small amounts by the body. It is used to speed up chemical reactions in the body that involve energy production, fat metabolism and protein metabolism. Because it breaks down fats and proteins, it is useful for the treatment of diabetes, when fat and protein is often called upon as an energy source for the cells.
