Do I really need to take a prenatal supplement?
According to the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada, the U.S. National Academy of Science, and the vast majority of health care providers, the answer is a resounding yes. Although a sensible diet is the best way to ensure a healthy pregnancy, the fact is that most women are not able to achieve the recommended allowance of vitamins and minerals through diet alone. It is estimated that 75% of pregnant women would be deficient in at least one vitamin or mineral if they did not take supplements.
A host of studies have demonstrated that proper nutrition during pregnancy has a favourable impact on the length of pregnancy, the ease of delivery, the baby's birth weight, and the continued health of both mother and child. In fact, a study done at the Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute found that the effects of nutrition in pregnancy are so far reaching that they may impact not only your child but your grandchildren as well.
What's in Platinum Naturals' EasyMulti Prenatal?
EasyMulti PreNatal has been carefully formulated to include a comprehensive range of the vitamins, minerals, and DHA (an important omega 3 oil) required to meet the needs of a woman's body during pregnancy.
Here are some of the key ingredients:
DHA:DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid, is particularly important in the development of the brain, the central nervous system, and the retina. The human body cannot manufacture DHA so it must be obtained through diet, or in the case of a developing baby, from the mother via the placenta and breast milk. The North American diet is typically low in foods containing DHA like fatty fish and animal organ meats. Add to this the fact that pregnant women are advised to restrict their intake of these foods, and it's not surprising that most only receive 20-25% of the required level of DHA.
Because DHA is the primary building block of human brain tissue, adequate intake is crucial during fetal brain development and for the first year of life when the infant's brain grows rapidly, tripling in size. There is a mounting body of evidence that a mother can improve her child's mental and physical development by increasing her DHA levels while she is pregnant and nursing. Ongoing research in this area is uncovering links between DHA, human intelligence, and various medical disorders.
Iron:Iron deficiency is the most common mineral deficiency in North America, affecting approximately 20% of women in their childbearing years. Many women are slightly anemic prior to pregnancy without realizing it because symptoms are subtle and often go unnoticed.
Iron is the main component of hemoglobin, which supplies oxygen to tissues throughout the body and is thus vital to both the mother and baby's health. The mother must produce additional blood volume, particularly in the latter stages of pregnancy, to support the placenta and growing baby. In doing so, she loses an average of two milligrams of iron daily and approximately 500 milligrams over the course of the pregnancy.
If the mother's iron intake is insufficient prior to pregnancy and in the first trimester, her iron level may be depleted by the second and third trimester when iron is most needed. This will result in iron-deficiency anemia, a condition in which there aren't enough red blood cells in circulation to meet the body's oxygen requirements. The mother will experience fatigue, decreased stamina, and reduced resistance to infection, and there is a greater chance that the baby will be premature and have a low birth weight.
Folic Acid:Folic Acid is required for protein synthesis (the formation of new cells) and hence is essential to support a woman's increased blood volume during pregnancy. It also plays a roll in the development of the baby's brain and spinal cord. For years, public health agencies have been urging women to supplement their folic acid intake during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy because there is clear evidence that folic acid reduces the baby's risk of developing neural tube defects like spina bifida and anencephaly. Some studies suggest that folic acid may cut the risk of these defects by as much as 75%.
Vitamin D: Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin that promotes calcium and phosphorus absorption in the digestive tract. It is instrumental in the formation of bones and teeth and in maintaining a healthy immune system. Though Vitamin D can be consumed in the diet, it is mainly produced by the skin upon exposure to the ultraviolet rays in sunlight. Women in North America tend to be deficient in Vitamin D due to the prevalence of sunscreen. In Canada, the problem is compounded by the fact that less ultraviolet radiation reaches the Earth in northern climates, particularly during winter months.
calcium:EasyMulti PreNatal does not contain any calcium because calcium should be taken separately. Calcium can inhibit absorption of other nutrient, such as iron. If your health care practitioner recommends that you take calcium supplement then you should take it at least 2 hours after taking EasyMulti PreNatal to ensure optimal absorption of both supplements.
