Sage against Night Sweats
Since going off HRT my night sweats returned. I read Beat Menopause Naturally which talked about patients using sage to battle these. The cost was very reasonable so I decided to give it a try and have been pleasantly rewarded. I suffer very few interruptions to my sleep thanks to sage.

Sage

Sage has been used medicinally by ancient Greeks, Romans and Egyptians. Egyptians used it as a fertility aid, while Greeks used it for its ability to stop bleeding and clean wounds, ulcers and snakebites. Sage was a sacred herb for Romans, harvested for solemn ceremony.

Research has shown that sage possesses antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, and astringent properties. As such, it is now widely used to treat hemorrhoids, blood or phlegm in the urine, excessive breast milk or fluid in the abdomen (ascites). It is commonly used for colds, congestion and fever. Due to its antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral effects, it can compliment and support the immune system when dealing with infection. Research using sage for the treatment of Herpes have shown reduction in size, number, severity and time between outbreaks of both genital and oral cold sores. Studies using sage have also demonstrated a reduction in pain associated with sore throat.

Sage has also been shown to have positive effects on memory and research is showing it has promise in the treatment of mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. In North America, sage is taken as a dietary supplement to treat hot flashes, night sweats, and estrogen loss, as well as a tonic for fighting fatigue and nervous exhaustion, thus making it a common supplement for women suffering through menopause.

The typical and safe dose for dried sage leaf is 4-6 grams/day. As a liquid extract (1:2) 2-5 ml/day is recommended. There are no safety issues or contraindications with the use of sage. Due to a lack of research it is not recommended in pregnancy or lactation (unless it is used during weaning period to dry up milk supply).

Sage Leaf FAQ's

What is the purpose of taking Sage?
Sage helps to cool the body - regardless of where the body's "heat" is coming from or what it is being caused by - for example: perspiration, night sweats, hot flashes, etc.

I am in menopause, but other than hot flashes I have no other symptoms. Could I take Sage all on its own?
Yes, for sure! Sage works incredibly well and very quickly for relieving hot flashes.

I am a male, with hot flashes and perspiration issues. Can I take Sage from your WomenSense line?
Yes, there would be no problems with men taking sage for excess perspiration, but men who experience hot flashes should perhaps (in addition to supplementing with Sage) consult their ND or GP for a check up as this can sometimes indicate underlying hormone issues.

Where is the Sage sourced from?
The source of the Sage is dried leaves and it is of European origin.

Menopause

Once treated by mainstream medicine as a disease, menopause is a normal transition in a woman's life from an age of fertility to one of wisdom. Like anything important in a woman's life, this transition can sometimes be a challenge. With the recent revelation that standard hormone replacement therapy for the relief of hot flashes caused a significant increase in the risk of cell growths, a course of action for support during this transition can be confusing. But there are effective and safe alternatives to HRT with drugs.

Clinically, menopause is complete when one year has passed since the cessation of menstruation. The perimenopausal period can last for several years. During this time women experience gradual cycle changes like more or less bleeding and variations in cycle length. Anemia can occur due to heavy menstrual bleeding. Another way to experience menopause is through the removal of the ovaries. Hormonal shifts during perimenopause or after ovary removal cause hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, low libido, urinary incontinence, dizziness, heart palpitations, headaches and mood swings. Factors that aggravate symptoms are poor diet, stress, alcohol, caffeine, tobacco and spices.

Around menopause hormone release occurs sporadically and produces symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, low libido, urinary incontinence, dizziness, heart palpitations, headaches, irregular cycles, irregular bleeding and mood swings. Estrogen receptors are located on non-reproductive cells too. Therefore, menopause affects the aging of a women's whole body. Skin cells need estrogen to stay smooth and moist. The thyroid gland uses estrogen to maintain body temperature. Proper bone formation requires estrogen. The arteries and heart require estrogen for maintaining their functioning.

Progesterone and testosterone levels also decline in menopause. Progesterone has a calming affect on the brain and nervous system and menopausal women may suffer with anxiety, depression or other emotional concerns. Testosterone regulates the libido and contributes to a decrease in sex drive often reported by menopausal women.

The typical perimenopausal symptoms are treated conventionally by synthetic hormone replacement of estrogen, progesterone and/or testosterone. It decreases perimenopausal symptoms and was also believed to protect against heart disease, and bone loss. Recently these benefits have been called into question. New research suggests that there may also be health risks associated with hormone replacement regardless of whether the source is synthetic or natural. Talk to a health professional about the benefits and drawbacks of hormone replacement.

The relief of these symptoms and natural support for the increased risk of other health concerns aggravated by menopause should include some or all of the following: balancing of hormones (sex hormones as well as adrenal and thyroid hormones), reducing symptoms like hot flashes and mood swings, supporting bone health, and supporting heart health. Natural support of the menopausal woman involves supporting the whole body because at menopause women lose the protective effect of estrogen on the body. The skeletal and cardiovascular systems are especially susceptible to degeneration due to low estrogen levels.
