- Gluten Free
- Dairy Free
- Corn Free
- Egg Free
- Vegetarian
Ingredients:
| ½ cup water | 1 cup unsweetened non-dairy milk | 1/8 chai spice |
| 1 rooibos tea bag | 1 tablespoon sugar |
Directions
- In a saucepan combine water and rooibos tea bag. Cover with a lid and bring the water to a boil. Once boiled, turn down the heat and allow the tea to steep for 2-3 minutes while simmering.
- Keeping the tea bag in, add in the remaining ingredients and bring back to a light boil/simmer to ensure all the contents are mingling together. Stir constantly to avoid any burning. This should take no more than 3-4 minutes.
- Once it has reached a light boil, remove the saucepan from the heat and let it sit off to the side with the lid still on – another few minutes should do the trick, while allowing it to reach drinkable temperatures.
- Before you pour the tea into your mug, remove the tea bag.
- Sprinkle with additional spices if you wish, enjoy hot.
Make It This Way
Make it healthier by substituting regular white sugar for xylitol, stevia or coconut palm sugar. Don’t have any rooibos tea? Don’t panic. You could also use a chai tea bag if you have it, or if you’re really stuck, a regular black tea. Avoid unnecessary sugars/ingredients by mixing up your Chai Spice, such as the one below.
Chai Spice 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
2 teaspoons ground cardamom
2 teaspoons ground cloves
1 teaspoon ground coriander
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon white pepper
Pinch sea salt
Try This
Enjoy this drink all year long by making it iced. Pour the final drink over some ice and shake and strain, or put it in all in a blender for an extra creamy treat. Sprinkle with some cacao powder and serve!

Looks deliciosu! I love the taste of chai and to find a dairy-free way to make it is amazing. It is easier to digest in my case but still provides the same great flavors, tastes, and creaminess of regular traditional chai. Cinnamon is wonderful for your health too so I always love recipes that have it as an ingredient. This would be perfect for the colder months, or really for any time of the year.
Hello,
Indeed, Chai is soothing and gentle on the stomach, great tea to make if having upset stomach since it's dairy free! Enjoy it on a chilly evening.
Have a healthy day!
Delightful recipe! My postdoctural mentor was always a big fan of chai and so I would pick her up a chai tea latte from Starbucks from time to time. She preferredd it with dairy as the Starbucks dairy free options were too sweet for her tastes. I appreciate you providing a DIY recipe because this will allow me to make a dairy free masala chai drink using unsweetened nondairy milk so that it will not have the problem of being too sweet. And, I bet that I can beat out the flavor of Starbucks by making the drink for her myself too :)
