    The History of AOR

It also depends on the source and activity of the enzyme preparation. A dose of between 8,000 and 24,000 USP units of lipase activity daily can be considered as a general recommendation. It is based on suggested pancreatin supplementation.   • Protein - Benefits, Types & Supplement Varieties

    Protein is second most abundant substance in our body; it is second only to water. It makes up much of the structure of our body, including: our muscles, ligaments, tendons, bones, organs, glands, nails, and hair. It also makes up the vast majority of the molecules that allow our bodies to function and regulate itself; protein is required for: cell signaling molecules, hormones, transport molecules and most enzymes in our bodies, including our digestive enzymes. Without sufficient amounts, our bodies cannot function properly.

    DNA – The Code for Proteins

    Our genetic material (DNA) is the blueprint that shows each cell how to produce the proteins that make life possible. It is differences in this coding that makes the variations of our proteins that make each of us unique. For example, it is protein in the iris of our eyes that gives us our distinctive eye colours.

    What is Protein?

    Proteins are composed of building blocks called amino acids. These subunits are linked together by peptide bonds to form chains that can be straight lines, or branched like the sub-branches on a tree. When we eat protein the body must break these peptide bonds in the digestive tract using proteases. Then single amino acids, or amino acids in short chains (called peptides), are absorbed through the gut, into the body, where they are used as building blocks to create whatever protein the body needs.

    Essential Amino Acids

    Some amino acids are considered "non-essential". This means that we do not need to ingest these amino acids, because our bodies can biosynthesize them using the skeleton of other amino acids. So long as the body gets sufficient protein, these amino acids are not required. The amino acids that the body cannot produce itself need to be taken in through the diet, and are called "essential" amino acids. There are 9 essential amino acids: isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, histidine, and valine. Some amino acids are "conditionally essential", meaning that certain populations who naturally don't make enough, or all humans under certain conditions, may require certain dietary intake to meet their needs. Some examples of conditionally essential amino acids are: arginine, glutamine, cysteine, and glycine.

    Protein Requirements

    According to the Canadian Dietary Reference Intake guidelines: sedentary adult women require 46 grams of this nutrient per day, while sedentary adult males require 56 grams to avoid deficiency. This is just the amount to prevent malnutrition of this nutrient. Athletes and individuals who are physically active at work or play will all require additional protein to repair their tissue and build more lean muscle. People who are recovering from illness or long periods of inactivity require additional protein to rebuild their lost muscle mass as well. The immune system is dependent on this nutrient to make the cells and antibodies that protect our body. Frequent colds, flus and chronic infections are signs that the body may need more protein. In general, the recommendation is between 1.5 and 2 grams of protein per kilogram body weight daily intake for fairly active people. This is around 125g per day for a 70kg (155lb) person.

    Excess Protein

    The body is incapable of storing this nutrient, so when we ingest it in much larger amounts than the body needs, excess protein has to be broken down. The extra amino acids are transported to the liver where they are broken down to create energy. Although an easy energy source, this nutrient does not "burn clean", and breaking it down creates a waste product called urea. Normally this is easily excreted through the kidneys in our urine. This excretion requires calcium, so high protein diets should be combined with a calcium supplement to protect against reduced calcium stores.

    Protein Malnutrition

    Protein is an easily available energy source for the body. When insufficient protein is ingested in the diet, or insufficient calories are taken in, the body will catabolize this nutrient from muscle mass and then eventually from the organs to cover the deficit. This breakdown of body tissue can even happen before exhausting fat reserves. As these levels drop, the body will prioritize protein usage to enzymes and signalling molecules to continue proper bodily function, and will catabolize other tissues to do so. As such, insufficient protein or calorie intake results in malnutrition, which causes muscle wasting, and eventually can lead to the breakdown of organs, and tissues. Eventually this causes a condition known as Kwashiorkor, which causes diarrhea, edema (swelling) and a large protruding belly.

    Weight Loss

    It is important to note the connection between low calorie diets and loss of muscle mass. Those individuals seeking to lose weight who overly restrict their dietary intake will ultimately lower their muscle mass. This is counterproductive, as our muscles are the body tissue that burns the most calories by weight. From a biological perspective, the body's response makes sense; when food is scarce, reducing the amount of calorie burning tissue you have, allows you to live with lesser requirements until food can be found again. In modern society, this leads to the inability to lose weight despite a calorie-restricted diet. Recently, the popularity of high protein diets has made these supplements popular for weight loss. When protein is ingested with carbohydrates, it slows the rate at which sugar enters the body. By avoiding spikes in blood sugar, this nutrient minimizes the storage of sugar as fat. Individuals with blood sugar imbalances, like diabetes and hypoglycemia, will benefit from protein's regulation of blood sugar. Because protein also builds muscle tissue, which burns more energy than other body tissue, it can also help weight loss.

    Types of Protein Supplements

    BCAAs – Branched Chain Amino Acids

    This group of amino acids: valine, leucine, and isoleucine are essential amino acids that contain branched side groups. They have been shown to help prevent the painful lactic acid build up during strenuous exercise that causes stiffness the morning after, also known as delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS).

    Single Amino Acids

    A number of amino acids can be supplemented individually in powder or capsule form. Since each amino acid has particular benefits and effects, please see the individual articles for a better understanding of each one. Some examples are: lysine, glutamine, glycine, leucine, and histidine.

    Protein Powders

    These powders can be used for many different health and performance enhancing purposes. There are a large variety of readily available protein supplements and processing techniques. The six main supplemental sources are:

    • Whey
    • Egg
    • Hemp
    • Soy
    • Rice
    • Pea

    although other sources are occasionally used in some supplements. Higher quality formulas use superior processing techniques, and avoid binders, fillers, artificial flavorings and sweeteners. Be sure to check the ingredients on the label of your supplement.

    Types of Protein Powders

    Whey

    This form of is concentrated from a byproduct of the production of cheese from cow's milk. It comes in three major forms, each of which has a different bioavailability. Whey, in all three forms, is the most bioavailable form of supplemental protein available. There are some cases of sensitivity to whey, and those who are allergic to milk should avoid its use.

    Egg

    Chicken eggs are an excellent source of protein as well as a number of other vitamins and nutrients. When just the egg whites are used, less nutrition is available, but it is still an excellent source of complete protein and does not contain the additional fat. Egg is the second most bioavailable protein source. There are some cases of sensitivity to egg, and those who are allergic should avoid use of this supplement.

    Rice

    Rice protein powder consists of brown rice treated with enzymes to remove the carbohydrate, leaving only the protein behind. This source is vegan and hypoallergenic. Since it is lower on the food chain it is also more eco-friendly, and doesn't take such a large environmental footprint to create. Since it is naturally a little low in the amino acid lysine, rice protein is often mixed with pea to create a more balanced supplement.

    Pea

    Pea protein powder is created using yellow split peas. Like rice, this type is vegan and hypoallergenic, and also has a much more eco-friendly footprint. In order to balance its amino acid profile, pea is often mixed with rice to create a more balanced supplement.

    Soy

    Soy protein powder is extracted from soy beans. It is an inexpensive vegan form that offers a complete protein source. In addition to being rich in this nutrient, soy also contains isoflavones that act as phytoestrogens in the body. Although this makes them less than promising for body builders, this can be of great benefit to post menopausal women and others with hormone imbalances.

    There is a lot of controversy around what form of protein is best, according to both source and preparation of each type.     What Are Raspberry Ketones?

    Ketone is the term used to refer to a particular chemical bond, and any molecule that contains that bond. A ketone bond is very reactive, which can allow the aromatization of a molecule containing it.

    Aromatization means that we can sense the molecule as a smell. Raspberry ketones are a major aromatic compound in red raspberries, and thus they are responsible for the smell of raspberries. Because of this function, they have been used in cosmetics and perfumes as a scent since the 1960's. Naturally extracted raspberry ketones exist at about 1-4mg per kilogram of red raspberries. It would not be possible to eat enough raspberries to get a physiologically active dose. Because of this, naturally extracted raspberry ketones are extremely expensive, and so commercially available varieties are often synthesized in a lab.

    Weight Loss Benefits of Raspberry Ketones

    Dr. Oz's advice is based on two research studies involving mice that were fed high fat diets and high doses of raspberry ketones (1-2% of food weight). These mice failed to gain as much weight as other mice on the same diet. When examined, it was found that the mice fed these ketones had higher levels of the hormone adpionectin. Another study also found that they promoted the breakdown of fat inside the fat cells to increase weight loss of mice. Thus, raspberry ketones have been established as body-fat-reducing in mice.

    The initial research on these ketones appears very promising. Unfortunately, because there are no human studies, it is not possible to say that the effects in mice will also be seen in humans. Further research using humans is required to know the safety and efficacy of raspberry ketones in humans.

    How Fast Do They Work?

    On the show Dr. Oz explains that results can be seen in a few days, and will progressively increase over time. There are no research studies to back up his claim at this time. For one thing, iodine deficiency is not always the cause of low thyroid hormone (hypothyroidism). Therefore, not always indicated in thyroid conditions. In fact, Iodine supplementation in autoimmune-related thyroid conditions should, in most cases, be avoided, as these individuals are especially sensitive to iodine toxicity. Even in cases of goitre, iodine must be supplemented with caution, as too much will exacerbate or worsen the problem. Iodine supplementation in higher dosages or over long periods of time can lead to accumulation and have some very serious side effects, even for the average individual, especially young children. Iodine toxicity can actually create thyroid problems where none existed. Talk to your healthcare professional before supplementing with iodine at dosages above what a typical multivitamin provides.

Perhaps one of the biggest complaints associated with vitamin B12 deficiency is significant fatigue. This is also one of the first noticeable benefits of vitamin B12 supplementation. 

    B12 is only naturally available in animal products (meat and cheeses), and as such, vegans are often told to supplement with, or at the very least increase their intake of, B12-fortified foods. It is often recommended that elderly individuals supplement with B12, as well. As we age, our bodies are less efficient at absorbing B12, due to a decline or complete lack of a substance called intrinsic factor. Individuals who suffer from gastrointestinal disorders such as Crohn’s, Ulcerative Colitis and IBS should also supplement with extra B12, as gut inflammation will affect B12 absorption. 

    B12 is available in a sublingual tab, which helps to bypass any gastrointestinal issues that may be impacting absorption. B12 is also available as an intramuscular injection for the same reason. Have your serum B12 levels checked through your MD or ND to find out if B12 supplementation is right for you. 1000 mcg/day, more if compensating for acute deficiency.

    Almost everyone knows of the novelty item the 'Chia Pet'… and now, we know just how healthy these little seeds are as a food, too! The fibre in chia seeds actually slows down digestion, which also slows down the release of blood sugar, and keeps blood sugar levels balanced (important for diabetics). This also means increased satiety, leaving us fuller longer, and less prone to cravings and impulse snacking. This high fibre snack may also help lower high cholesterol levels, support healthy and regular bowel movements, necessary for detoxification. Chia seeds are also high in Omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, manganese and phosphorus, as well as protein. Not bad for a tiny little seed! 2 Tbsp./day.

    3. Coconut Oil

    Coconut oil is by far one of the most popular natural health products – and rightly so. So why is coconut oil so great? For one, its a quick burning energy, meaning it's a fat that we utilize quickly. It's a“good” fat that won’t make us fat. As long as it's consumed in moderation. Coconut oil is high in lauric acid, a specific fatty acid that is found in breast milk, just one of the many reasons experts say “breast is best”! Coconut oil can also be used topically, as a moisturizer, lip chap and the list goes on and on. Because coconut oil is naturally antibacterial and anti-fungal, it can also help fight infection, inside and out! But it doesn't stop there. Coconut oil retains its nutrient value at relatively high heat, meaning it's perfect for cooking, stir-frying or baking. It really does deserve all its hype!

    4. Curcumin

    Another fan fave is curcumin. Curcumin is a compound of the spice turmeric, giving it its bright yellow colour. It’s a very effective anti-inflammatory. What does this mean for us? Well, simply put, if inflammation is at the root of all disease, then curcumin could be an amazing prevention tool. It can be used to treat joint pain and stiffness, inflammatory bowel issues, such as Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis, as well as antibacterial, antiviral, and antimicrobial. Curcumin is also a liver tonic, used in the treatment of jaundice and liver disorders, as well as supporting detoxification. Curcumin is best absorbed with food/fat. Dosage ranges vary greatly depending on the quality of the supplement and the condition being treated. Consult your Naturopathic doctor for the dosage that’s right for you.

    Digestive enzymes, whether it's proteases, amylase, lipase, papain, or betaine, can make up for your otherwise less-than-optimal digestive process. When there is inflammation in the gut, no matter what the root cause, when pH is out of whack, no matter what the cause, or as we age, when we’re stressed… these are all scenarios that can lead to an impairment in our own production (or complete lack of production) of pancreatic enzymes. This only leads to further inflammation, nutrient deficiencies, symptoms such as gas and bloating, and a slew of other issues if unaddressed. Magnesium deficiency has been associated with fatigue, weakness, anxiety and irritability, irregular heartbeat, increased blood pressure, constipation, muscle cramping, menstrual cramping, headaches/migraines, diabetes, impaired calcium absorption, and increased inflammation… just to name a few. Dosage: 250-750 mg/day.

    The evidence supporting the use of fish oil, and other plants-based omega 3 fatty acids just continues to mount. The long-chain fatty acids in fish oil, EPA and DHA, are anti-inflammatory, blood-thinning, and immune-balancing. They are indicated for the treatment of arthritis, mood disorders, such as depression, ADD, ADHD and autism, autoimmune conditions, brain development and function in general, as well as coronary heart disease, high cholesterol and heart arrhythmias. In other words, we should all be taking fish oil. If you are a vegan and avoiding animal products, using plant based omega 3’s, such as flax, can have similar benefits. Aim for 2000-3000 mg EPA and DHA combined daily. Take with food.

    They may not be ‘new’ on the supplement scene, but we are learning more and more about the vital role that our gut plays in the healthy functioning of our immune system. A healthy gut flora is a huge part of this. If the ‘good’ bacteria outnumber the pathogenic bacteria, we don’t become infected; it’s as easy as that. Probiotic supplementation, as well as avoidance of inflammatory foods, along with a healthy diet, low stress, and no antibiotics, can keep our intestinal flora flourishing, and our immune system working strong.     This important fat-soluble vitamin is only recently getting proper recognition for its great work, not to mention being let off the hook for a blood clotting effect that it doesn’t possess (that’s K1!). Vitamin K2 is important for both heart and bone health. Vitamin K2 is responsible for getting calcium to where it needs to be – bones and teeth – and removing it from where it shouldn’t be – like arteries and soft tissue – and where it can cause damage. K2 is also important for the absorption and utilization of vitamin D3. Vitamin D toxicity is also associated with abnormal calcification, but is now thought to be more a symptom of K2 deficiency than too much D3. There is some research to suggest that K2 may also play an important role in mutated cell prevention, as it controls cell growth. Yet another reason to supplement. K2 is not thought to be associated with toxicity the way other fat soluble vitamins (D, A) can be, but its likely that 200 mcg/day is all you need to kick start your body’s K2 dependent proteins (which move calcium to where it needs to be!)
