If you’re looking for a snack that can keep you on track with your healthy lifestyle in just one bite – you’ve found it. These small but powerful bites are jammed packed with protein, several vitamins, omega-3 fatty acids and iron! They’re raw, dairy-free, gluten-free and most importantly, delicious. Who knew that these little bites could be so mighty!
- Gluten Free
- Dairy Free
- Egg Free
- Sugar Free
Ingredients:
| 12 medjool dates, pits removed | 2 teaspoon spirulina | 2 tablespoon cacao nibs |
| 1 cup crushed walnuts, divided | 3 tablespoon cacao powder |
Directions
- Using a blender or a food processor, combine all of your ingredients together (leaving out half of your divided walnuts) and pulse. You want everything to be broken down into small pieces, but not completely crushed.
- Using a knife, or your hands, break the remaining walnuts into smaller crumbs. Set aside in a dish.
- Using your hands, take a small portion of the dough and a small portion of the walnuts, and roll the mixture into a ball. You will want to use the heat from your hand to warm the mixture so it sticks together. Repeat until all the mixture is gone.
- Place each ball into a tubberware container lined with parchment paper and put in the freezer for five minutes, so they firm up.
Make It This Way
If you want to get an added dose of protein, try adding some protein powder into this batch. Just remember that protein powders become very potent in recipes, so if you’re not overly in love with your flavour, try using a non-flavoured brand.
For extra medium-chain fatty acids, add a dollop of coconut oil into your dough, it will help form the balls and add a subtle taste.
Try This
This makes a great grab and go snack! Try making them in bulk and storing in your freezer. That way you can just pull a few out, as you need them.

Have a healthy day!
It has been a while since I have tried spirulina. Does it have a neutral flavor or, like I suspect, is it similar to matcha in having an earthy flavor? I find that the rich, earthy and natural flavor is a delicious pairing with sweet chocolate (eg white chocolate or, as this recipe uses date-sweetened cacao/nibs). This mention of spirulina has inspired me to go look for another savory nutrition powerhouse to sneak into next week's meal prep-stay tuned! :D
