CHASTE TREE TICNTURE - HORMONE REGULATOR
Mode Of Action
Chaste tree’s hormone regulating effects on the female reproductive system are well documented. Rather than having a mimetic hormonal effect, chaste tree increases progesterone levels by inhibiting the secretion of prolactin by the pituitary gland. Its regulating effect on progesterone and prolactin levels reduces symptoms of PMS such as irritability, mood swings, headaches, bloating and menstrual cramps. Chaste tree regulates periods that are too long or too short and unusual uterine bleeding. It also corrects menstrual troubles due to a shortened luteal phase. Chaste tree is also used for ovarian insufficiency and fertility troubles, especially when they are linked to weakness of the corpus luteum. Chaste tree helps recover hormone balance after taking oral contraceptives and reduces the symptoms of menopause (hot flashes, insomnia) by restoring the estrogen/progesterone ratio.
Its hormone-balancing action helps clear up acne in adolescents of both genders. It is antimicrobial and mildly anti-inflammatory. It promotes the secretion of melatonin and is used in the treatment of insomnia, especially for those who wake towards the end of the night. It also stimulates the production of breastmilk in nursing mothers.
Vitex agnus-castus contains bitter principles that stimulate digestion, reduce liver congestion and improves the metabolism of lipids. It has proven efficient in preventing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and oxidative stress, two common causes of liver dysfunction in post-menopausal women. The main constituents of chaste tree are diterpenes (labdane), iridoid glycosides (agnuside, aucubin), flavonoids (apigenin, isovitexin, orientin, casticin, penduletin), volatile oils (cineole, limonene, α and β-pinene), tannins, fatty acids (linoleic acid) and vitamins (C, carotene).

History
Chaste tree has been used to treat gynecological problems for over 2500 years. In Ancient Greece, it was famous for decreasing libido. It was used to control the chastity of women and monks to help them keep their vows of celibacy. The eclectic doctors of the 19th century recommended chaste tree to treat menstrual and breastfeeding difficulties. In the 20th century, Gerhard Madaus created a drug from chaste tree and conducted many experiments with that preparation. His studies validated the
effects of chaste tree and led to its many modern uses. Chaste tree is now used widely in Western countries to treat conditions of the reproductive system.
