Uncover The Uses & Benefits of Vitamin K Supplements
Vitamin K is one of those vitamins that doesn't always get the limelight it deserves, but its discovery is as interesting as its myriad health benefits. Indeed, vitamin K was first discovered in the 1930s by Danish scientist Henrik Dam, who, at the time, was studying the role of cholesterol in chickens. Quite by accident, he stumbled upon a new vitamin when he noticed that the chickens fed a cholesterol-deficient diet developed severe bleeding disorders. Dam realized that something other than cholesterol was at play. This mysterious compound, which was essential for blood clotting, was eventually named "Vitamin K," with the "K" standing for "koagulation," the Danish word for clotting.
Soon after, another scientist, Edward Doisy, expanded on Dam’s work by isolating Vitamin K1 from alfalfa and Vitamin K2 from putrefied fish meal. The discoveries resulted in both scientists receiving the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine in 1943. What started as a lucky discovery in a chicken coop has since become central to our understanding of how the body regulates clotting, bone health, and so much more.
Implications Of Vitamin K In The Body
Vitamin K is best known for its role in blood clotting. When you get a cut, it's Vitamin K that helps your blood coagulateand form a clot to stop the bleeding. But its benefits extend far beyond clotting. Vitamin K also plays a crucial role in bone health by regulating calcium in your bones and arteries. It ensures calcium is deposited where it's needed—in the bones—and not where it can cause harm, such as in the arteries. This makes Vitamin K an unsung hero in preventing conditions like osteoporosis and arteriosclerosis.
There are two main types of Vitamin K: K1 (phylloquinone) and K2 (menaquinone). K1 is primarily found in leafy greens, like spinach and kale, while K2 is found in fermented foods and certain animal products. K2 is further divided into several subtypes, the most notable being MK-4 and MK-7, both of which have different absorption rates and health benefits.
Why Supplement With Vitamin K?
While Vitamin K is found in many foods, it can be challenging to get enough from diet alone, especially if you're not eating a lot of leafy greens or fermented foods. Many people opt for Vitamin K supplementation to ensure they’re getting adequate amounts to support optimal health. This is particularly true for those focused on improving bone density or cardiovascular health, as Vitamin K plays a vital role in both.
It's crucial to be aware that Vitamin K deficiency can lead to serious health problems, including osteoporosis and artery calcification. This underscores the importance of considering Vitamin K supplementation, especially for those at risk of deficiency. Ensuring adequate levels of this vitamin can be a proactive Step in preventing these health conditions.
It’s also worth noting that certain medications, like blood thinners and cholesterol-lowering drugs, can interfere with Vitamin K absorption, making it even more important to monitor levels.
Key Health Benefits Of Vitamin K
- Supports proper blood clotting and reduces the risk of excessive bleeding
- Enhances bone health by promoting calcium regulation in bones and reducing the risk of osteoporosis
- Helps prevent arterial calcification, supporting heart health
- Improves the body's response to insulin, aiding in the management of blood sugar levels
- Promotes cognitive health by protecting the brain from oxidative stress
Shopping For A Quality Vitamin K Supplement
Vitamin K supplements are widely available and come in various forms, making it easy to find one that suits your needs. You’ll often see Vitamin K as part of a blend, particularly for bone health, where it’s paired with other nutrients like calcium, magnesium, and Vitamin D. This combination works synergistically to enhance absorption and support the entire skeletal system.
You can also find Vitamin K in isolated supplements, which are ideal if you're specifically targeting blood clotting or cardiovascular health. These standalone products often feature K1 or K2, or even a combination of the two. When choosing a Vitamin K2 supplement, you'll likely come across MK-4 or MK-7—both are beneficial, but MK-7 tends to have a longer half-life in the body, meaning it stays active for longer.
Vitamin K supplements also come in various delivery formats, including capsules, soft gels, and liquid drops. Liquid drops are an excellent option for those who prefer not to swallow pills and often offer better absorption.
When selecting a Vitamin K supplement, look for a product that is third-party tested for purity and potency. You'll also want to choose a product that contains a bioavailable form of Vitamin K, such as MK-7, for optimal absorption. If you're opting for a blend that includes Vitamin D, make sure the product uses a high-quality, natural form of both vitamins to maximize the health benefits. Some great brands to consider include Aor, Canprev, Naka, Natural Factors, Naturopathic Labs, and Now.
